80LS1T
Well I got my header situation fixed. Its ugly but its functional. After that I installed a fuel filter (inline type) and hooked up the wire to the alternator that charges up the field windings(yeah I didnt have that hooked up before and just couldnt figure out why my car would die after 10 minutes of running? ) So I took it down the road for a short little spin! I know one thing for sure that fuel filter is too small because it bawgs(sp?) down went I get into it a little bit. Oh well I will just have to get a bigger one with bigger lines on it. The sucky part about that is that this one was $19.00 I still have to hook up my voltmeter and water temp gauge. My fans and water pump are wired up and working like they should but I dont know how hot its getting So the water temp is first on my list of things to do. Thats why I didnt go too far, I didnt want it to over heat. All I can say is watch out man, cause this car hauls some ass! I can squak'em(sp?) in third pretty easily and it really goes even though its not getting the right amount of fuel. I have to go to a family event this weekend till Sunday so I wont get to work on it till then but its "balls to the wall" now. I've got an itchy gas foot! Tim240z
Guy, Cool...after all the trials and tribulations, you are almost there!!! Just be careful...you have been in a hurry to get things done, do yourself a favor and, before you go out on the road, go through the car from bumper to bumper and roof to rails with a pile of wrneches and double check EVERYTHING!!! It would be a terrible shame to wrap your work around a tree or lightpole because you forgot to tighten a bolt. Happy motoring!! Tim
john kosmatka
Hopefully i'll have mine done soon. most likely not though this will most likely be an ongoing project for better performance as i get the money.
Dan Juday
Hey Guy, about that wire on the alternator, did you install a resistor in series with that? I'm looking at the Helm manual and it shows a 470 ohm resistor in the circuit inside the instrument cluster. Mine is a '95, is yours the same way? 80LS1T
Dan actually I learned from another members site(I can remember what the site is right now though) that you should wire up the "F" terminal of that connector. From what I understand it is very critical if you use that other terminal what the resistance is because if you dont have it exactly like the factory did it will burn up the alternator! The other member that did this said this has worked for him and 2 other people he knows with out any problems! He found out the hard way and actually went through 2 alternators! Oh and Tim dont worry I plan to do exactly what you said and check it all over. I have that same worry about something going wrong! Tim240z
Wait a Minute!!!! What's this resistor thing!! Did I miss something? I haven't put in anything like that....please explain!! What gives? Thanks, Tim
Guest greimann
I think he refering to the "switch on" circuit wire that goes to a key switched 12 v source. MAD sells a kit for this: http://www.madelectrical.com/catalog/cs-130.shtml After looking at MAD's site I also can across some very important concepts on the "S" terminal, or voltage sensing wire for the alternator. After reading these articles, I am going out and making some wiring modifications today. This is good stuff and VERY IMPORTANT CONCEPTS TO UNDERSTAND and also explains why ONE WIRE alternators are not for cars with accessories like electric lights and fans. http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/remotevoltagesensing.shtml http://www.madelectrical.com/electricaltech/chevymain1.shtml
Tim240z
OK, that makes sense. I am using my main power switch as my remote sensing terminal. Everything is poweres directly off of that, so i guess I'm cool (or at least my wiring is ) Tim
80LS1T
Ok I just got back from an actual drive down the road! I took it out for about a 5 mile spin! I passed 2 trucks and oh boy does it have some pick up! Then on my way back when I went to turn around I kind go in to it a little bit and as I shifted from 2nd to 3rd I broke the shift lever off at the top(by the shift knob!) I guess I must be really tough! LOL Its not a big deal, I'll just take off the knob and weld it up! I also think I might have a dreaded drive line angle problem. I will have to go to Harbor Freight and pick up an angle finder and align my driveshaft to the correct angle. No big deal but I can still feel it Other than that all is good!
