280ZX power steering in Early Z?

Recommended Posts

I did as much searching as was feasible and didn't see this topic brought up by anyone or any further information on it (I did find a couple of links to now non-existant threads).

Seeing as the L28ET is a boltin swap (and something I plan on doing shortly) is it possible to use the entire PS pump, rack and lines from the donor car (83 280ZX for example)? Looking at diagrams of the two racks they look virtually identical. Has anyone done this, and why is it not talked about or asked more?

Sorry if these are stupid or already-answered questions, I'm just trying to figure it all out!

I believe you'll need to swap cross members as well....on my ZX (79), I swotched from the power steering box (non rack and pinion) to the non power rack and pinion from an early Z (not sure what years), and had to switch cross members as well

Isn't the rack on a 1st gen Z in front of the crossmember, and behind the crossmember on a ZX? That would mean you would have to replace more than just the rack.

hey guys what yrs does the power steering come on? My dad had a 78 2+2 and I think it had power steering. I would really like to narrow down a certin yr for my project. I want ac and power steering. Gotta have the ac (houston) but Im not sure about the power steering. I guess the problem is that I was told to go for a 73 or older due to emissons. As I want to drop in the L28et. Is the PS really needed?? I know when the belt broke on my 83 I could barely turn the dam thing, I realize there is a difference between the power rack/ and not power, but I dont want to fight the car if I place larger tires on.

I think (fairly certain) that PS didn't start until '79 in the ZX's. The rack is on the wrong side of the crossmember (looks llike they turned the whole front suspension around backward in the ZX's- the TC rods run forwards instead of back like on the '70-'78 Z's). I have wider than stock tires on my '77 (non-PS), and the turning effort is really no different than with the stock-width tires. If your rims have the wrong offset, you WILL run into increased steering effort and poor handling to boot. IMHO, probably not worth the effort to go with the PS (at least not from the ZX), but that's just me.
