Guest Fairlady Luvr
This story is a bit long so if you don’t have the patience you can see the pictures here (dial-up beware), http://www.cardomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=345220&page=2 I went to check out this ’77 280Z this afternoon. The guy is asking $1200 OBO. The car seems straight, just a dent above the rear passenger wheel that can be popped out. I’ve been reading Z forums about the traditional trouble spots for rust. There is rust behind the wheels, under the battery tray and at the hatch. The rails have a touch of rust but it doesn’t seem very advanced. I poked the floor plans pretty hard with a Phillips screwdriver and they seem solid. Same for behind the fuel door. I don’t know if that is too much rust to try to fix or if it is just a minor amount. The owner “says†it runs but he hasn’t driven it since Dec. I had to pull my Optima out of my car to try to get her to turn over… right before it did it started squirting fuel from the crusty old lines. Needless to say I stopped immediately. The guy had left and I didn’t want to set the car on fire then leave . I was thinking of offering the guy between $600-$800 (assuming the car will run) but if the rust is too bad then I’ll just keep looking. The Personal Story: I’ve been saving for a Z32 for a while now, even bought one off eBay (another story). I purchased a house and used my Z $$ to make upgrades to the house. The mod bug has hit me hard and I need a project car or I’ll end up spending my $$ on my Maxima. I’ve always been a fan of the early Zs and I figure the $10k I would spend buying a stock 300 would get me an older Z plus a good deal of mods. So here I am. Thanks in advance for the advice! rags
Tough to say with the pictures you took. Pull up the carpet to show the floors, take some pictures of the frame just behind the front wheels. Tought to explain but if there are holes when you look behind the front wheels they will be very obvious. Look under the battery tray. Look at the strut towers from inside the engine compartment. If these areas are all clean, then I would say $1000 is a fair price for an east coast car. Joe
