Brian Long’s book, “Datsun Z: Fairlady to 280Z” (Veloce Publishing, 1998) has a photograph of a 240Z in a wind tunnel. The car is tufted – a crude but often effective way of visualizing the near-surface flow. In the immediate vicinity of the hood lip the tufts show local separation. I’m surprised to see that only a few inches downstream, the flow appears to reattach. Reasons for this might be (1) the car is raised way off the test section floor - a very bad idea; (2) the engine is probably not running, and the flow through the grill is not realistic; (3) wind tunnel free-stream turbulence acts to hasten reattachment behind the hood lip.
