I'm putting a '95 Camaro LT1 in my 260Z and want to put power steering in it. Has anyone done this and what rack & pinion did you use and did you have to make modifications to the motor mounts to fit it all together?

For the few of us that have done this, I think the Ford Mustang/T-bird are the rack of choice. Recently though, it was mentioned that the (2nd gen??) rack appeared to be a good match for fitment. In my case, I used Heim joints on the ends instead of the traditional OEM rod ends.

Sorry, the 2nd gen RX7 rack was the other mentioned rack I believe. Mounting modifications using the Ford rack ranged from a nice set-up using the existing OEM Datsun crossmember rack brackets (which appeared to do the job very well) to a full custom fabricated crossmember. Rack modifications were limited to simply shortening the threaded rods on each end to desired length (just a few inches total) depending on what your rod end application will be.

My front suspension is currently at Bob's Racecar Chassis in Conroe getting chrome moly tube control arms/heim joints AND a power rack.. I will try to find out which one he used/planning to use....

Wasn't it Alsil that also did the power steering and found that 95 mustang tie rod ends fit perfectly into the Datsun tapers on the steering spindles? I'd like to do this sometime, it'd sure be nice to one hand it in and out of parallel parking spaces instead of huffing and puffing and swearing like a trucker. :D

Terry, I'm not sure if you were referring to a very old post I put up about the RX7 rack?

I bought a 3rd Gen RX7 rack from the JY and it is exactly the same as the Z rack (fits in the same way with the same mounts) BUT it is about 2 inches longer on the right side. I have not yet mounted this in a car, but I'm sure it will work. The only issue is to find out what bad things arise from having a shorter end link on one side when the road gets rough. Hope this helps.

I guess you could put a 2" spacer on the other side, but likewise not sure how it'll effect bumpsteer and all that. Sure sounds like a neat swap though from a labor perspective.
