Guest 400HP280z
ok i did a search and found out tons of info except my original question. which setup is cheaper and easier, the SCARAB or the JTR? I'm not too concerned with the postion of the motor. i just want to know which setup causes the least amount of brain damage to install. baddriver
The biggest difference is that you need to remove and re-engineer the hood latch on the JTR conversion. This step is not neccesary for the scarab. This step is also not needed if you use an LT1, since the distributor is located in the front. The only other major difference is the shifter location in the car. The shifter will be a little too far forward with the scarab, but is in just the right spot with the JTR. So both setups have some advantages and some disadvantages to the install. Personally, I think having the shifter in the right spot is a better option, since once the hood latch is done, you'll never think about it again. Guest Z-rific
The Scarab position, IMO, is cheaper and easier. You can get the motor mounts from Hooker. You can also get direct bolt on full length headers from them which only need some minor clearance work. If you plan on going with a manual tranny, then I would go JTR, as the shifter will be way up, almost under the dash with Scarab position. If you use an automatic, you can obviously mount the shifter wherever. The Scarab will also have hood clearance issues that JTR doesn't. But you don't have fuel pump or starter issues with the Scarab. I have Scarab, and the main complaint I have is that the bolts don't thread into the mounts enough to make me feel real comfortable. I have the Hooker mounts. I also think the Scarab position looks better, as it fills the engine compartment better. I think it's more natural looking. Then again, for a more natural looking swap, you gotta love the LS1 swap.
Cruez
I would have to disagree... I think the LT1 looks like it was made for the car after seeing Marks setup... He did a great job on his...
jt1
What part of Mark's car isn't immaculate? His LT-1/JTR setup is the nicest V8 Z I've seen. It makes mine look like a rolling junkyard. The thing is wicked fast too. I wouldn't pit beside him if he wasn't a such a good guy. The Hooker/Scarab may be a little easier & cheaper, but the results obtainable with the LT-1/jtr are exceptional. John

DavyZ
You have a manual you can go to with the JTR setup, which makes the JTR position 'easier" in my opinion. I love a reference manual! Davy
Guest Anonymous
Thanks for the compliments guys but John is being very modest about his car. Very well set up and thought out and I'm not sure I can keep up with him. Mark
