Gonna tackle rear struts

With the help of a friend, I replaced the stock front springs and shocks with Tokico HP's. It took us several hours to do one side, (including a few trips to the auto store), and the other side only took about 45 minutes.

I have the rears also, and after reading some of the horror stories, I thought about having a shop do it. But I've decided to try it. I have all day Friday and the same friend will be helping.

Any tips? Would it be easier just to drop the whole rear? How hard is that?

The rear end, as is, rubs on the top of my 265/50/15's on speed bumps and the like. I know the new rear springs will lower the car an inch. I'm hoping that the stock springs have sagged an inch in the last 25 years. I think if the new springs put the car where it is now, the new stiffer springs will hold the rear end up better.

I don't have an impact wrench, but I do have a number of large wrenches, breaker bars, a huge 2 way torque wrench and some long pipes.

Advice welcome.

Disconnect the rear brake lines and sway bar if you have one, then disconnect the 3 bolts holding the tops of the struts. You should be able to swing the control arms way down so that the struts are very easily accessible.

The rears are easier than the fronts, IMO.

In case you did not figure it out while doing the fronts, go to a parts store and rent a spring compressor. Should make the job easer and much safer.

What about spindle arms and a bolt that sometimes requires an impact wrench?

Maybe I'm remembering a post about converting to coil-overs or changing out bushings?

Aaron,

I'm smack in the middle of Huntsville. About a mile off the Parkway off of Bob Wallace Rd. Near Hunstville High School, if you're familiar with the area.

Beauregards is good, but if you give me enough notice, I can whip up some gumbo or shrimp po-boys. For casual dining, I love Tim's Cajun Kitchen.

Let me know next time you're in town.
