Guest zfan
Well yesterday my friend Daniel and I swapped out the cam and intake on the 355. I had posted earlier in the week re: cam/intake changes and asked opinions. I decided on a comp cam xr276hr-10 and Weiand stealth intake. The cam specs are 222/230-505/510 and is a big step down from the 236/244-520/540-110 cam that was in it. Turns out the cam in it was degreed an extra 4 degrees and that did not help low end Im sure. I put this cam in straight up. The car needs some fine tuning but appears to have gained good lower end,not too much but too much and wheels would just spin anyway. I stayed with the 750 double pumper so I need to play with that today and reset 700r4 detent(It shifts to hard)! I still think 3.90's in the back with drag radials is the way to go. By the way I gained good vacuum in the switch, went from 8 lbs idle to 14 lbs at idle. Mike Mike
Kevin Shasteen
Glad to hear it Mike; I knew a smaller duration cam would help. after fine tuning your carb & prior to installing 3.90 rear gears, be sure to solve for your "Lack of Traction" problem 'first & foremost'. Once you solve your traction issues then you can look at your gearing needs. A more appropriate Dynamic Compression & less Overlap both have extreme positive effects on low rpm power; good vacuum makes all the difference in the world-glad to hear things are looking better! Questions: 1) What does your engine idle at now? 2) Is the Weiand manifold a dual or single plane manifold? Guest zfan
Kevin, The idle rpm is approx. 1050 rpm's with vacuum at approx. 13/14 lbs, in gear idle is 700. The manifold is a Weiand stealth dual plain manifold. Sits about 1/2" lower than Victor Jr. Im still working bugs out not getting full throttle I found out today(minor adjustment). I think it is a little rich, maybe too much carb on this build. Throttle cable and detent mounts are located in different spots versus Victor Jr. By the way carb is a 750 Holley double pumper. Guest Anonymous
Stealth is what I run too, nice manifold really, weiand claims its good to 6800 which is a lot for a dual plane manifold. In the queue is a weiand x-cellerator single plane for a fuel injection project a good friend and I are working on, its pretty tall, but will work excellent for a FI manifold. Aside from a rougher cast finish, I like the weiands better than the Edelbrocks, but its a personal opinion. Glad to hear you picked up some torque, its a good example of over cammed on a street car, it just makes it not as much fun to drive. To coin a phrase, cam it where you'll drive it. Mike C
For a driver you should be quite pleased with that cam. Comp, as well as most other manf, grinds their cams already advanced and designed to be installed straight up so I think that's the way to go.
