Guest jjohart
Hi. I may be dumb and dumberer, but I already bought the Bosch fuel pump and Cartec fuel control for my 83 280ZX Turbo before I even have the NPR intercooler/3" exhaust on. I have to admit impulsivity, going on recommendations of folks on the list in buying the components, but, can someone tell me the how and why of the fuel pump and controller? I assume the installation is fuel pump replacing stock one, but where does the progressive one go? If I'm only planning on 12-14lbs boost/250-300 bhp, why are these units so helpful? Sometimes it seems like they're only plan ahead devices for other projects like 37lb injectors, an air fuel computer and other stuff I'd like to avoid..I mean the list of "improvements" can go on and on, but I'd like to keep to near dead-stock reliablity (my car has 44K miles!) and I fear the complexities creeping on already, with a dearth of nearby qualified techs to help if stuff goes wrong! Thanks John
randy 77zt
the fuel pump might be needed for a car with larger injectors and aftermarkit efi system but stock zxt unit is fine for stock injectors.the fuel pressure regulator basically just restricts the fuel return and runs up the pressure on the injectors.its kind of a crutch for not having aftermarkit efi.its use will stretch out the usefullness of oem efi but you will hit a wall soon .probably at about 275 at the rear wheels.the oem air flow meter is a restriction.i would skip this stuff and save money for aftermarkit efi.i have a new cartech unit in box-will sell if you want it.just got a ford 302 with a 5 speed. Guest jjohart
Hmmm..most of the listers I got replies from on what I needed for equipment suggested that a fuel pump was a definite with an intercooler. The progressive rate RRPRFP, or what ever its initials stand for, is an option as I understand it, to even out the fuel curve. Maybe I'll have these things on Ebay soon, since I don't want to get an air/fuel computer or aftermarket chip/EFI system. I just don't want my car to conk out on the side of the road if I put the high pressure pump and Cartec/Bell units in...so aren't there any other adjustments to lean out the air fuel mix without adding yet MORE ancillaries (i.e AFC/aftermarket chip?). Get a Walbro HP or a Bosch, both flow well up to 80 psi or so.
