Guest Maxwell
Hello, I'm new to American engines... I cut my teeth on Toyota motors... Diffrent, but very alike. My question is, What head casting numbers fit my block? I have a GM 3970010 4 bolt main 350, that had an 882 head on one side, and a 624 head on the other... (I dont know why...) Do only 882/624 heads fit it? I looked at the mortec site, and it had a lot of good info, but didnt have a list of "yes/no" numbers... Also, do Vortec heads have casting numbers, or are they all the same? Thanks for the info. Maxwell
DavyZ
As a rule of thumb, the small block Chevy heads are basically interchangeable on every small block. I would not build a performance motor with two different heads, but if it stock, it probably won't matter much. Vortec heads are not a bad upgrade for the price, and will raise your compression ratio if memory serves me correctly (58cc vs 76cc??) Keep researching, and buy a good engine building book from David Vizard--you'll get some good info. Davy
Guest Power_Slave
LS1 aside, an sbc is an sbc and a head is a head. except when you get into 400 sbc theory. Then it gets twisted a bit. 882 heads are total jokes. GET RID OF IT!. The 624s arent worthy either. If you have the cash get some trick flows, vortecs, or even AFRs if you can hack the nasty price. free up huge hp. Mike C
For the most part as noted above, small block heads will generally interchange. As expensive as it is to get a set of OEM heads rebuilt completely, go aftermarket (Dart Iron Eagles or World Products) or GM Vortec (which will require a new intake manifold) If you have exhaust manifolds that use the oddball extra end bolts, you'll either need a set of heads with that hole or a different exhaust manifold. LS1 is COMPLETELY different engine than traditional SBC, but the LT1 is similar, but the heads will NOT interchange because of the reverse flow cooling. Also, everything else being equal, closed chamber heads are worth 20hp compared to open chambers even after factoring the increased compression out. Guest zfan
Yeah Tomahawk is right, get a set of vortec or even camel hump heads with 2.02 valves. Roller cams are awsome! Mike
Guest Maxwell
Lots of good info! With what I have read on this site so far, I've gone from wanting to rebuild the l24 (which is a fine power plant if thats what you want) to doing the v8 conversion. I'm still working on the body right now... new floor pans, role bar, body work.... but sometime in November, I'm looking to start building the motor... I found out that i can order new vortec heads from scogens (something like that) with a higher lift on the springs already done... is that a good deal? Also, I'm starting from scratch.. the motor I have has no intake for carb, infact it has a bad crank in it, but the guy gave me a good crank out or his stock when he found out what I was making... He got this big s-eating grin, and after about ten minutes of telling me about a Z he saw years ago, cut the price for the block... go figure... Thanks for all the help! silicone boy
Maxwell, welcome to the board. I, too, started building foreign engines (VW in my case, the Toyota 4AGE--sweeeet screamers if done right). Then I found this board (indirectly through the Mortec site somehow-lots of good info) and learned to appreciate the fact that doing about $1000 worth of upgrades could get you 100 HP, not the 10 that I would get with VW's . A year ago, I knew nothing about V8's and now I'm building a 383 thanks to the members of this board. You really learn a lot, and when you don't know, someone is willing to help out. As for the heads, I emptied the piggy bank and got AFR 195's, but I would consider getting Vortecs if I had to do it again. Great performance for the money.
