Guest Anonymous
Any one have one? Pro's, con's? Is there a manule for this type of setup?
Sumo
The Scarab position shifts the engine forward a few inches more than JTR. Therefore more weight bias to the front. Parts are still available thru hooker i think. As far as i know Scarab, the conversion company went out of business and never put out a manual. Mikelly
DO a search here for a thread on V8Zcar handling and you will find over 100 posts about the Scarab Vs. JTR type setups and just what everyone's opinion (At the time) was... You will also see an interesting back and fourth between Kim Blough, myself and a few other members... Regardless of the outcome of the thread, that topic had some of the most interesting information to date captured in it. Mike Kelly
Guest potterma
On the topic of handeling: I have 1996 Dodge Avenger that's pretty much stock. I was curious about the weight and weight distribution. With me in it and 3/4 tank of gas it came in at 3050 lbs. Weight distribution F/R: 61/39! I knew it was bad, but I had no idea it was THAT bad. Even so, this car handles the twisties fairly well. Obviously not as well as the ZX, but I have friends who have offered unsolicited opinions ("that car corners really well. I could never keep up with it.") that indicate it may not be the worst car on the road. I guess my only point is that weight distribution can be "really bad" from the automakers, and still be considered a "sporty" car. Maybe a few percent weight transfer to the front is not as noticible as you'd think? On the other hand, with a 75 lb tool case in the trunk, on the way home from the airport, I was able to hang the rear end out Didn't expect that! Anybody else have numbers on their "daily drivers" they'd like to report and comment on?
Guest Fast Frog
Sumo is right. Brian Marrow's Scarab Engineering went out of business in the mid 80's (1984 I think). For a yr or two, Scarab body and trim parts were available but ceased after time. Brian's approach was for you to bring the car to him; and for a handsome fee, he'd do the conversion for you. I looked into this in 1980 but ended up only purchasing a Scarab front air dam that is still attached to my car today.
