LS1 Fitment Questions

Recommended Posts

Happy Holidays,

I have been reading more info to try and educate myself and I am still unsure of which motor to install into my 240Z. As I have stated before I did swap a V-8 into my 510 so I am familiar with swaps. I have read both the JTR Z car swap manual and the JTR TBI/TPI swap manual. I have also read the HP LS1/LS6 performance upgrades book. I know I am comfortable with the non FI swaps but I am intrigued by the FI motors. I am considering an LS1 motor. I would prefer a manual trans car so the T-56 would be my choice. I do have access to an F-body LS1 and T-56 from a 2001 Camaro.

I have located a shop nearby that specializes is street rods and they just helped a customer complete an LS1 swap into a Hot rod. I spoke to them and they feel confident they can help me with any areas of the swap I can't do myself.

I know that a few of you have done this swap and I have the following questions:

Does the John's Cars Z kit include the mounts for the LS1 motor and trans? Does it place the engine far back to the firewall like the JTR kit?

Does it lower the motor using spacers like the JTR kit?

Will the A/C compressor clear everything mounted in it's stock location?

Will the alternator clear everything mounted in it's stock location?

Will the F-body exhaust manifolds work in the 240Z or will I need headers?

Does anyone have a website set up showing documentation of their LS1/T56 Swap?

Has anyone used this company for their wiring?

Any other info that you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for all of your help and opinions.

Yes, he has both the T56 & 4L60E setups.

As far as it needs to go and still have room for heater hoses, AC, etc. It's been proven (for the most part) that the setback have very little affect on the handling due to the fact that the car would have to have a fully sorted and dialed setup for that little bit to even make a difference and 99% of the Zs out there are not dialed in to that extent.

Does it lower the motor using spacers like the JTR kit?

No! Those spacers are not needed and not a good idea, only to be used for hood clearance, which is not an issue with that motor.

Bill's car has this setup and you can see how everything is setup.

Yes, the manifolds will work or you can spend money on headers from John.

Not that I'm aware of since there are only a few LS1 Zs out there and nodoby documented and put that info out there. You've been spoiled by DQ and all the detailed info in the 510 community that is not available with the Z crowd. Of course, there are less than 1/4 of the amount of people in this group than the 510 list.

Not that I've heard of. Most just rework the OEM stuff. Might be a good idea if you are unsure of the electrical stuff.

Any other info that you could provide would be appreciated.

Not much out there besides what's on this list. Bill covered quite a bit at: http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=27740

Good luck!

Bill, (Phantom) has the only John's Cars LS1 swap done at the moment, so he will be the best one to talk to about that. Or contact John, a search will pull up the info, I know Bill has posted it before. I do know that Bill uses a special A/C compressor and it is not in the stock location. The alternator is also tricky because it is right where the steering rod lives. I am using stock A/C but you have to mill down the bracket for it to fit. I got my brackets from Street and Performance.

Cyrus and I both did something like what you see here:

John now has his full price list of all components that he has available for the LS1 swap. The key item is the motor mounts. Without them setting the motor in an exact location most of his other stuff won't work right. Because of that - if you don't buy his mounts - he won't sell you the other components. Smart guy - who would want all the headaches?!?

He can be contacted at zcar@johnscars.com or 214-426-4101 or you can go to his web site: http://www.johnscars.com

Some general photos of his work are available in my album - link below.

I just commented about this in the "LS1/Jeromio's eng swap" thread in this same forum.

If you want a step by step pictures at what is involved you should check out the sites that have already been listed in the posts above and also check out Jeromio's site-full of pictures and explanations of those pictures.

If/when I get the chance to swap motors I will definately go the way of the LS1: IMHO it is an excellant engine, you get EFI, the latest in eng tech, tons of F & Y bodies around w/either standard or manual trannies...oh yea, and it's Alluminum

Kevin,
