tjcannon
1988 300ZX Turbo (not anymore!) All I have to do is find my stupid carb so I can check for fitting under the hood. Almost there! I'm soooo happy!!!
A. G. Olphart
So TJ, did you find it, and if so are you still happy?... or are you now looking for your hood scoop Tried looking at your pics- site must be down this afternoon.
tjcannon
Well, getting the mounts welded was a complete surprise. I figured I wouldn't have it done for a LONG time, so stuff is still kinda scattered. I'm pretty sure my carb is in the trunk of my Lumina, which is in a shop in Austin getting the tranny fixed. As soon as I get back up there (around the 15th maybe) I can go check on that. I am currently in negotiations with a guy to buy his Holley 670 Street Avenger off him, though. Either way, I should have some clue about engine fitment by February, but probably not any sooner. :-
Chaparral2f
Its good to see another Z31 . What transmission did you use? I just got my front mounts in and am looking for ideas for the rear cross member. I am going with a Th350, and it will almost fit on the stock rear member. JKDGabe
Why are you going with the th350? Cost?
Chaparral2f
JK You hit it right on the head. I had a good 350 so I just kitted it and bought a Olds converter. (slightly highter stall) I have high hopes of scoring a Ford 8.8 rear so I can get a taller gear.
tjcannon
TH350 here too. Cost restraints also. And because I plan for it to be mainly for the strip, and I only hear good things about those TH350's . I plan on doing a TCI 3000-3500 stall. Chaparral2f
Have you done the rear cross member yet? I'm just about to start on mine, and as soon as my camera comes back from t he shop I'll try to get some pics in my gallery.
tjcannon
No, I sure haven't, but let me know if you get a good idea. The bolt holes look like they'd be just BARELY out of line. If you figure it out befor eI do, post. And I'll do the same.

Guest 327zxer
Heck yeah someone is actually doing the swap...I have the same year turbo 300zx with every option you can have including the LSD diff..but last year it caught on fire and burnt everything up under the hood, but if there is a way to stick a SBC in one I am gonna do that cause it would kick serious butt... Guest TigerZ31
tjcannon I was wondering if you've got it started yet... Also, any links to your pics would be great, as your website appears to be down. I'm preparing to start the same conversion I'll upload pics and a walkthru as I begin. chaparral2f Have you started your conversion yet? I notice you're in oregon... where at? I'd like to get in touch, so we can collaborate on problems and trade pictures. I also have a few parts sources around here (portland) that you may be interested in. I've got to get my vehicles moved to my new work area first, and then I'll begin the conversion. Also, because we're moving into spring, and I own a garden center, it may be slow going for the first couple of months for me. This link kind of explains what I'm shooting for... http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30826 Hope to hear from you guys soon! Chaparral2f
TigerZ31, I live in Eagle Point, about ten miles from Medford. If you know of any Z parts sources, I certainly would be interested. I used to deal with All Z in Gresham, but they seem to have gone out of business. Its really a shame because the guy was really helpful. I have the engine and transmission mounted in the car. There is tons of space around the engine, so the installation is really pretty easy. My camera has gone on a vacation to the olympus service center for a while, so I can't document the swap. I am going to have to use a cowl hood since I have a really tall ignition (vertex mag) and air cleaner. Also, I'm going to need the extra space to clear injector stacks if I ever get around to putting the injection on. I'm using the th350 and cut the center section out of the cross member then welded a plate in to move the mount holes about 3" forward, bolted the member to the rearmost holes in the car, and used the stock tranny mount. I got a radiator from a local shop,(the brand name is Northern Radiator) I moved the battery to the spare tire well and plan to relocate the gas filler to behind the licence plate to make room for a RH exhaust pipe. The biggest problem seems to be exhaust clearance. I have a set of block hugger headers that dump about 3" above the snout on the steering rack. Because I enjoy the challange, I think I'm going to go with a longer steering rack ( stock 19" need 23") If I were doing this again, I would either use the stock exh manifold that dumps at the rear, or maybe shortie truck headers.(The manifold should work, but the headers are just a guess from looking at the pics in the summit catalogue) As it is,Keep us informed about your project. joe
tjcannon
Chaparral2f, that's frickin' sweet! Explain exactly what you did for the tranny mount. That is the only thing I'm lacking before I can get the driveshaft cut, exhaust built, and all the little stuff to be finished. The tranny mount and money are my only real problems right now. I'm about to go into the Air Force, but I wanna finish my baby first. It just seems like I can never get on top of things. I have no way to get to Houston right now from Austin, where I am, cuz I have $460 left to pay off my Lumina to get it out of the transmission shop, then I owe $500 per month for my apartment rent (this is my last month in the lease, and I don't even use my bedroom, so I think I'll find a cheap econo-box apartment this month). After bills and everything, I don't have much left at the end of the month out of my measly income. I want to go in the airforce NOW, but I want to drive my car first. As I see it I have the following expenses to deal with before I can leave: Recurring apt. rent: $500/month Recurring storage rent: $90/month Lumina out of the shop: $460 Torque Converter (3000 stall): $350 Water Pump: $50 Alternator: $80 Various Junkyard bolts n stuff: $100 (I plan to get the yoke for the TH30 driveshaft, a dust cover for the TH350, a bunch of bolts for the motor mounts and stuff, and some other as of yet unforeseen parts at the junkyard.) Mechanical Fuel pump: $50 Driveshaft cut, balanced: $100 This may not seem like a lot to some of you guys, but I work in a frickin' sandwich shop making $7 an hour. It seems impossible sometimes. I may end up just going into the airforce and saving up until I get out and I can work on it then. I'm not sure how things go in there, but I expect to be 5000 miles from Houston with no free time for the next 4 years, but I guess I'll ask my recruiter and find out. Sorry for the rant. Chaparral2f, DRAW me some pictures with measurements!
Guest 85tzcheees
after fitting the engine and the tranny, did it match up with the differential and driveshaft stuff or did u have to buy everything else? is the TH350 a manual or auto tranny? ur car is gonna be awesome!!
tjcannon
My tranny's not done being fit yet, but it will all line up. The only thing needed is to get the front part of a driveshaft from a car with a TH350 and have a shop cut them to the correct length and weld the two together. The TH350 is a 3-speed automatic.
