ToplessZ
I would like to know what im dealing with as far as heads and stock power. This is a 350 in a 1974 camero. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also what would be my best bet on a good priced bolt on carb/intake for this engine. Thanks Jared
Guest Anonymous
Well 1974 was before cats in most states (california started in 75 in car's I believe) and its also in the middle of a bad smog motor period (I'm pretty sure the original LT1 was dead by then) but without numbers you can't be sure what its really got in it. If its the stock motor, its probably low 8-1 compression with big chambers (about 76cc I'd guess but without head number castings thats a guess) a mild cam and probably numbers in the 180-200 hp range. Without changing the cam and head you'll see only minimal gain with just a intake and carb, best is subjective too. I like weiand manifolds and holley carbs, others like edelbrock like the performer series and a edelbrock carb (I'd get the carter carb if I was considering a edelbrock carb, its the same and 10-15 bucks cheaper). But to really wake it up, small chamber heads, a more serious cam and then the intake and carb. Such a change could easily get you another 100-150 hp or more depending on heads and cam. Guest Anonymous
Jared ...if you are engine shopping go to web page and print you a set of casting # locations, block casting #'s, and cylinder head #'s to identify SBC's. Then you can identify all these engines and what they have.
Mike C
3 V8's available, all with '76 cc heads. First is a 145hp 2 barrel motor. Second is a 185 hp 4 bbl motor L-48, finally is a sweet motor, the 9.0:1 L-82. It also has the 76cc heads, but 2.02/1.6 valves. Rated at 245 hp, this was the highest factory rated small block from '74 until something like '89 whne the L-98 hit 255.
