BillZ260
I posted this under another header but thought that it could use it's own heading. I may have come across why there can be an ubundnce of fuel and or exhaust fumes in these early z's. This weekend I finished welding in the cover where my spare tire was. A buddy of mine was touching up some of my work from underneath the car when I notice that you could see a reflection of the blue light very easily in the hatch area, while he was welding on the UNDER SIDE of the car. Closer inspection lead me to realize that the area around the perimeter of the "C" channel that supports the rear strut towers are not sealed!. If you reach your fingers around the the inside of the "C", you can reach down under neath the car? Also there was light coming around the outside edges of the "C" as well. If there was any exhaust or fuel leak under neath the car, I would assume that it would easily be pulled into the car by way of these holes. And when you windows are down, it should be even by creating a vacume and pulling more in from under the car, correct? Has anyone else noticed that these are not sealed, is there a reason? I was very suprized by this and I hope that this could be the unseen problem so many of you are having. I am going to use a good silicon and seal off the top and bottom of this area, let me know if there is any reason not to do this! Here is a crude pic, had to borrow it from someone on this site and draw on it.
Guest Zachb55
you know, i was really looking at that area of my Z closely a while back when shooting some expanding foam into a couple holes here and there, and thought about doing it there too, but wasnt sure if it even needed sealing, ill be sure to hit those next time im out there though, thanks for the tip! i couldnt see why sealing this area would hurt? maybe even stiffen the supports up just a hair if were lucky -Zach
Guest BigWhyteDude
could you just weld up the gap in the metal instead of sealing it with foam or silicone? Andrew
