I've picked out an xtreme energy cam from comp cams for my 350. Is the lift something i should be concerned about? I mean is it something that would not work with the stock cylinder heads or is it all cool and can go right on in? Thanks

RadTad, my limited uderstanding is that comp cam xtreme energy cams were designed for 4X4 trucks for off idle torque. What are the specs on this cam for a 350 since there should be about 4 or 5 seperate grinds. My pick for a street cam for a 350 would be no more tha 204 degree intake/214 degree exhaust duration @.050. Lift .420 degree intake &.442 exhaust with lobe separation 112 degress which is basically the Edelbrock Performer grind. That will not strain the other stock engine parts severely and is compatiable with stock heads. That is my cautious view point for a light car that powered by a V8 is in normally final automatic Drive within 200 feet after starting

Radtad,

Xtreme Energy are some of the most popular cams these days for everything from towing to hotrod applications. They are not "4x4 cams" ONLY, although they do make several grinds that would fit the application nicely.

As far as concerns for your 350 regarding lift then. It's possible your cam has too much "lift" for your valve springs. If the lift of the cam exceeds the maximum lift capabilities of the springs, you will experience binding of the coils in the springs.

Comp has a very good tech support department and one call to them should answer your questions. Best to get the low-down straight from the horses mouth than to risk damaging your valvetrain..or WORSE.

Give them a ring with your info. Heres the number

1-800-999-0853

Also, have a poke around their site..lots of info there!

Good luck!

Thanks thats everything i needed to know. I was just trying to determine if i can put it in now or wait till i get enough money for that vortec high lift cylinder head package from Scoggin dickie. That number should come in handy, i might be able to call and find something else to keep me happy till i have the money.

RadTad: Everyones got an opinon! Its good that you picked out a cam for your engine. May I recommend that you take all the guess work out and contact CompCam's Tech. Dept. Give them your specs. and tell them what you are trying to accomplish...i.e. street, strip, etc. They will give you a pretty clear cut answer to just about any question that you may have concerning your application. They were very helpful when I ordered my cam and I appreciated their understanding and expertise. As per their recommendations, I wound up with a solid roller cam #12-771-8 which has a lift of...intake 570/exhaust 576. It's pretty stout, but that choice was predicated on the work that was done to my heads and other internal mods that I specd.

In any event, I would highly recommend your giving them a call prior to plunking down your money on something that may not be exactly what your looking for. Just a thought. Good luck.

Comps, VAN
