80LS1T
Well after my stepdad took my header to work to have it welded he brought it about 3 weeks later and told me that the guys at work said that they couldnt do it! Although they didnt say why....? I was like "what they could tell you that the first day?!" I was pissed off to say the least! Well since they "can't" / are too lazy to do it, I dedcided to buy a MIG welder to do it myself! I really wanted MIG welder anyways so this just gives me an excuss to buy one! So today I went and bought a "Lincoln Weld Pak 100", gas conversion kit, and one of those auto darkening helmets(man if you dont have one of these, you should get one! It is money well spent!) All in all it cost me just over $600. The welder isn't a huge welder or anything but it can weld up to a 1/4" thick material, which I figured was more than enough for the stuff the I weld. And that auto darkening helmet is awsome! I wish I had bought one of those when I bought my stick welder! Tonight I was practicing welding on left over pipe pieces that I had from when I made the header. I haven't wire feed welded in a while so I'm going to practice some more and then finish welding up my header this weekend! I already have the "hang" of it so not too much more practice will be needed. Guy 8)
Guest goldraven
yeah, its like riding a bike...wire feed welding is pretty strait foreward...you'll get it done. GL on it man!
80LS1T
Well my drivers side header fabrication is done! Now all I need to do is send it out to "JET HOT COATINGS" to be ceramic coated! Here's some more info & pics... Exhaust/Header Page
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
Looks great! It's hard to get the 3D-ness of the pic, but how much room is there around the underside for access to the spark plugs?
80LS1T
The front 3 plugs there is plenty of room and the last plug is a little bit tight but there is still enough room. I'm just glad I'm done with this! It took a lot of time and a lot of patience(sp?) to make this! gUY
Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
I think that's the right spelling. I was just looking at your design, and I was wondering if there would be room for a longer collector. If you could lengthen the collector some before it narrows down, you would probably get a bit better flow, as well as better tone. I was reading in my How to Build a Small Block Chevy book yesterday, and I remember it saying something about how longer collectors help with scavenging and tone. I suppose you could also have a large diameter head pipe that tapers down after about 8 inches and get a similar benefit.
Tim240z
Well done, Guy!! I know from personal experience the level of effort it takes to make headers! Good job. Tim
80LS1T
Nic, the few extra ponies that I wont get from having a shorter / less equal pipe lengths was not a concern. I just wanted a set of headers that don't leak and that look nice. When I had a header on the passenger side it was leaking so bad from more than one place that I actual parked the car for the winter in late September. Plus I was so sick of explaining why I only had one header. Granted the header that was on the passenger side wasn't much of a header...it had very short pipes and it leaked like crazy! I am more than happy to sacrific a few horse power for a header that doesnt leak and that looks nice. Guy
