jgkurz
Hi all, I have this nice B&M shifter that needs a modification to fit in my car without hacking up my console. I have a 83 Borg Warner T-5 trans that has the shifter farther forward than the Nissan 5spd. I need to cut the shifter inside the circle then rewelded at about a 30 degree angle. The rod seems to be made of 5/8 stainless steel. Can this be welded back together with any reasonable strength? Should I try and heat and bend vs cut and weld? Thanks in advance for your thoughts. johnc
Cut and weld assuming its weldable stainless. There are a few stainless steels in the 400 range that ar enot weldable, but they are pretty rare.
dot
Hey John: IMHO I would just heat and bend as high up on that part as possible so not to interfere with the hardening (if any) around the pivot. Then let the part cool as slow as possible. I put a pie plate over some suspension parts I was bending to let them cool. They worked out OK. I would be afraid that welding would introduce too much heat disturbing the strength of the pivot and promote failure.
