Thoughts on Sumitomo HTR Z II tires?

Recommended Posts

I'm stuck on either the Sumitomo HTR Z II or the Kuhmo Supra 712's. I've heard TONS of good things about the Kuhmo's, but on tirerack.com the Sumitomo's rate higher in every category over the Kuhmo's. I won't be racing this vehicle much at all. Tires size I need is 225/45/17.

Here's why I ask this question. First off both tires are only $86/p off tirerack.

Here's the short version of this story. I met a guy that works at NTB that also has a Z car. Well he had 2 michelin 245/45/17's and 2 BFG 245/45/17's just sitting around. I bought all 4 of them for $40 :D Well after getting the tires on the rims lastnight I found out that one of the michelins has a nasty bubble in the sidewall. He told me when I bought them that NTB would road hazard them and I could get a new set. He's not working today, but I called NTB and they can get both the tires I listed. He told me lastnight that I should be able to get about $175/p credit for the michelin tires, so that almost covers the full cost of the NEW kuhmo's or Sumitomo's! So in the end I should be able to get the 4 new tires for almost free, still out $40 from the original sale, but I'll still have a very good set of BFG's that I can sale and get my money back. Looks like I'll be getting free tires :D

Phyte - Cool!!

I'm still in my original quandry though. Was talking with some guys at a local shop earlier this week. One of them was pretty knowledgable about my S306's "Good 55,000 mile tires but a bit short on traction" but I never really got a solid recomendation on another tire other than they thought I could probably get sufficient traction with my same size (225/50-16's) if I get the right composition. At this point, in SECOND gear at 15 MPH I can light the tires up by just pressing down on the gas - not first gear, not dumping the clutch - just pressing the gas down in second. As I said before - the Yoko's suck. I know I can do better but I really don't want to spend a zillion bucks experimenting. I'm fine with a street version of a racing tire that's only good for 20-25,000 miles if I can get the traction and 150+ speed rating.
