Reasons for a mechanical fuel pump to fail?

My car stopped running on thanksgiving night. I thought my fuel pump crapped out so I bought a new one and put it in, no help so then I thought I had a clogged tank and fuel line so I cleaned out my tank and blew out the line but I reinstalled and that is all perfect but still no fuel going to my carbs... My fuel pump isn't working. I don't have an electric pump either so it must be the mechanical. Im considering taking off my valve cover to make sure i put it in right. But I think there is only one way for it to go. Any of you guys have the same problem? Help me out Im just a kid :( . Hope that guilt really kicked in right there just joshin'. Mike

often times mechanical pumps need to be primed. Try this:

Take the hose off the pump that comes in from the tank. Put another section of hose on, and route that to a bottle of fuel that is above the level of the pump (so that it gravitty drains to the pump). Hold it there and have some crank the engine. That should be enough to fill the carbs. Shut it off before the fuel is all used up. Reconnect everything. Restart the engine. That should create enough vacuum to pull gas from the tank to the pump.

thank you so much. I bet you that is the problem. I didn't think that a brand new pump would be bad especially one with such a simple mechanism. Thanks man. Peace and happiness.
