Caller: I cant connect to the internet...

(blah blah blah, trying to understand the error message. determined error to be "modem cannot detect a dialtone")

Me: Have you ever been able to connect before?

Caller: No, I just set this up.

Me: Do you have the phone cord plugged in?

Caller: Yes

Me: Which jack on the modem is the cord connected to?

Caller: The one with the little phone

(That is correct for an Apple, dont ask me why they made it backwards)

Me: Ok, and does the other end go straight into the wall, or is it connected with a splitter?

Caller: A splitter?

Me: Yes, a "Y" connector that lets you plug two cords into one phone jack.

Caller: Oh, I dont have a phone jack in this room, so I just taped the cord to the wall...

:twak:

And my favorite, from my first week in internet tech support...

Caller: I get an error message when I try to get my emails.

Me: What error message do you get?

(Click-Click on the phone-line)

Caller: It says "error, unable to connect", see, it's doing the same thing right now!

(Click-Click again on the phone-line)

Me: Ma'am, are you trying to connect right now?

Caller: No, I am just trying to get my emails, why wont this damn thing work!?

Me: Ma'am, do you have more than one phone-line?

(Click-Click again on the phone-line)

Caller: No, why? I just wanna get my emails!

Me: Ma'am, in order to get your email, you need to be able to connet to the internet first. You can't do that while we are on the phone.

Caller: What?!

Me: You need to be able to dial on the phone-line so you can connect to the internet, once you are connected, you can download your email.

Caller: What!? I can't check my emails unless I am connected?! Well that really sucks! You guys need to do something about that!

Aux, at least she had the modesty to say 'oh' and accept her oversight. I'll never know how many times I ended up going down troubleshooting deadends because the caller would lie about an error or setting because they didn't want to admit they were a dumbass.

I used to do support for a small ISP a while ago and one of them started mailing setup CDs locally. I received a call from a guy who was trying to put the CD in his stereo system! As if that weren't bad enough, it took me at least a minute to explain to him that he needed a computer to use the CD to get set up for a 'net connection. He then actually got pissed off and started yelling at me because they didn't send a computer along with the CD, thinking it was some sort of fraud.

im in class right now...and i feel dumber after reading those. Only thing i have that comes close is (i manage a pizza place in town), someone called in and asked to "rent" a pizza. Not sure how that works...should i charge an hr. rate? or a flat plan?

haha, at least with that type of work u get some things to look back and laugh at!

I worked in helpdesk for a little while and always found the funniest type of person was the type who would call up and give some really technical description of what the problem was and how I could probably fix it..

Most of the time you'd get down to their desk and find out they were just trying to sound smart and had no idea what was going on.. I mean.. if u knew what the problem was.. why did u call me?

As for renting a pizza.. send them an overdue fee when they don't bring it back :D

God I hope they dont bring it back! You would have to charge them a damaged fee cause its not going to look like what it did when it left the pizza place!:puke:
