Are LT1's that much better than a regular sbc?

I see most people on this site use lt1 engines. Is there a reason for this?

Do they just start out as a better setup?

By "regular" SBC, do you mean "carbed?" The LT1 was (is) one heck of a fuel injected motor. It flows better and makes more power then the TPI motors. Also, there are a lot of performance parts for LT1's. They have the standard SBC mounting points, so they can be JTR positioned easily. The '95 LT1 was the last(?) year before OBDII and has a sealed Optispark. That's my next motor unless the LS1's come way down in price.

Better is a relative term... Is it better than a smogged out 1977 Malibu engine, oh hells yes!, but is it better than a 400cid, aluminum headed, stack injected, billet cranked, 700 hp beast of a SBC, I'd say NOPE.

The main reasons in a nut shell for using the LT1 are as follows:

1) where else are you going to get a 300hp, aluminum headed, roller cam'd, fuel injected 350 for the same amount of money?

2)Bolts in same as any other SBC

3) 6spd is factory equipment(and darn strong)

and last but not least...

4) the fuel rails polish up nicely with only a small amount of polish :D

I need to add my 2 cents,,,

Have a LT1 in the garage and 280Z begging me to install it!

I picked the LT1 because:

1) Challenge

2) Smooth starting and smooth running

3) Dependable! 200,000-mile motors

4) Looks! Everyone has a carb...

5) Fuel economy

6) Once running no messing, you work up a 300 or 400 HP car and you need to tinker to keep it smooth.

I have a 95 Z28 motor and 6 speeds manual, paid $3,000 and it sits stock 270 Hp,. Runs Smooth as

Negative- Cost

:-D:-D:D:-D:-D

I used an LT1 is my 69 Camaro because it’s the easiest cheapest way to get EFI and a 6 speed into a place where a first gen SB would have been.

The optispark helps with fire wall clearances. The reverse flow cooling allows for higher compression ratios to be used on pump gas. The low profile intake makes for improved torque and hood clearance.

LS1 improves on many of these features, but the cost is still preventive for most folks. I am planning this swap for my z32 2+2.

Are you kidding? Can you get a 300hp, 6spd ANYTHING ELSE for only $3000? The LT1 6spd is the most cost effective means to get V8 power(torque) and a heavy duty manual trans into any car.

$3000 is a freaking BARGAIN for an aluminum head, roller cam V8 with 6 spd. Flip through Summit or Jegs, price this stuff out individually and see how much it will cost you.

I'm not flaming you! I just thought the last line about the cost(indicating it was expensive) was just plain silly considering what you get for the money.

Jamie,

Heck you did not flame me you made my day!

I felt I could have gotten more bang for my buck, if I bought a used v8 and manual transmission and spent $3,000 don’t you think I could have gotten more HP for my money?

I don't know. I know I got a pretty good deal on the motor/trans I have because they are hard to find and are great motors.

But I'm guessing if I bought a carbed 350 and some stand transmission both able to handle and produce the same amount of HP, Don’t you think I would have spent less? I should be running about 300 HP at the wheels.

Any opinion is welcome. :burnout:

Having picked up my 94LT1-T56 for $1400, it was definitely the best way to get power, smoothness and the benefits of fuel injections (including programmability) for the best price. I would like to go LS1 next, but the LT1 has a lot of room for upgrades before that becomes an issue. 500 HP out of a LT1 is not difficult or very expensive.

Tim,

You make me sick.. :puke:

1400 for both?!??

I could not get the tranny around here for under $2500.

I called every junk yard in the book, ended up on the internet and found the one I bought 14 hours away. And they were the only one that had one out of the 30+ yards that I emailed, who all by the way were suppost to according to the scherch engine I used...

You can spend $1000 bucks on upgrades and still get more for it than you spent...

YEah, I got a really good deal. Around that time I was actually hunting for a GN turbo, and was ready to drop some serious $$ to have one shipped from Fl when I found this deal. I pulled the engine and trans myself, took about everthing that wasn't welded to the chassis, incl. driveshaft, clutch master/slave, tons and tons of wiring, etc....

If you need a good source for complete engines, call All Mustang Performance in Phoenix. For my S-10 I got a complete 26k mi. TBI 305 w/ trans and all the other parts for $1800. A buddy of mine just got a 2002 LS1 w/6sp, 8k mi. harness, steering column, gas tank, and a box of other parts for $3500. They sell alot on EBAY, so they know how to palletize and ship. I think they're at http://www.ampperformance.com, or do a search. Good bunch of guys.
