Guest timhypo
You prolly wanna post the brakes question in the brakes forum and the flares question in the paint and body forum, but I'll answer them to the best of my ability. Also, if the search function works, use it, as these questions have been asked to the point that they're a cliche. On the tires, wheel size and backspacing are a big issue when evaluating what'll fit on your car. You also need to figure out what, if any, suspension mods you want to do before you start trying to fit wheels. People on here have fitted wheels as big as 17x9 without flares as long as backspacing is correct, coilovers are installed (they are much narrower than standard springs), and the fender lip is rolled out a bit (hardly even noticeable). There's a variety of ways to convert to disc brakes and 5-lug at the same time, the biggest problem being that you'd prolly wanna convert both front and back to 5-lugs so you can use the same wheels all around. It's kind of hard to piecemeal it as the parts are all so related and you don't wanna buy anything and throw it away a few months later, so you might as well do everything at once. So you have to decide what your final goal is with the suspension, brakes, wheels and tires and then buy the stuff to make it happen. I'm in the same boat as I just paid off my bike and am ready to really start on my '72 240z/V8 project. My money situation lends itself well to buying a few parts at a time, but with what you're talking (and I'm planning) it really makes alot more sense to save your cash and buy it all at once to make sure everything you're planning will be available at the time. This also prevents the car-on-jack-stands-as-I-wait-for-parts syndrome that these projects so often turn into. With that said, there's a couple guys on this board who sell upgrade kits that are much cheaper than the Arizona Zcar/MSA ($$$$$$$$$) stuff and you get good support to boot. I've seen them offer help on problems with other peoples upgrades on this board, the big guys won't do that for you. I'm planning on ordering my whole setup (big brakes/coilovers/5-lug) from scca when the time comes. His site has great stuff, but the pricing is confusing, at least for me. I'll just email him for a quote when the money's ready, but I'm sure it'll be over $1000 with what I want. Good luck.
Guest racerxlite
I have the 5 lug brake kit on my 75Z from Arizona Z car w/ Wilwood calipers. They are awesome! I have the 240Z booster w/ 280ZX master cylinder on the car that will be replaced this winter w/ a Tilton manual setup. The existing master cylinder is too small & the system is way overboosted. Mine is not a street car, built for racing only. Currently run it w/out any boost. I have 17X9.5 inch Boyd Codington Rims w/ 5 inch's of backspace, 275/40 tires. They fit great. For fender flares I have the Motorsport Auto IMSA (3 inch) flares on the car. A little tight on the rear tires, but no rubbing. I had them riveted on the car due to the cars racing use. Already cracked the passenger side from hitting a cone. The rear fender flares do not fit the same from driver's to passanger side. Wasn't and still not happy about that, but I'm the only one who notice's it. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions or if you want a photo. matt_benson@hotmail.com The rims & flares look great on the car. Last week driving to Thunderhill raceway in CA I had someone drive around the trailer w/ a video camera!
Guest racerxlite
On more thing. The money for the 5 lug kit was expensive, but well worth it. I have a friend in the club that has a 240 w/ a 327 in it. Everytime he looks at my brake's he get's pist off. He adapted the Toyota calipers up front w/ Sentra in the back & he hate's them. He's going to have custom race compound pads made for the car, which is going to be real expensive. He's still is not sure if it can be done for the Sentra calipers. At the autocross's I'm not having any problems, but he's dumping bucket's of water on his rotors to try & cool them down. If your going to race the Z, spend the money. If it's for the street, the Toyota calipers should be fine. Matt
Guest Anonymous
for the toyota calipers are there any special fittings or do they just bolt right on?, also how much did the 5 lug conversion kit cost?, and was it easy to install? thanks for all the info oh wait one more thing how much did you pay for your rims
Guest racerxlite
The 5 lug conversion kit was $2350 I believe. go to Arizonazcar.com for current information. The rims are Boyd Codington "Tune" rims. I paid around $300 a piece. Matt
DavyZ
Or you can go to Mike (scca) site or Ross Corrigan's Modern-motorsport site and get as good or better for less... Davy
Guest Fast Frog
Just for your info: I purchased 7"(front) and 10" for the rear Centerline wheels from Jim Cook Racing. These are 15" wheels and were(are?)made special to fit the 1st generation Zcars with 4 hole lugs and the appropriate wheel spacing. The 10" wheels will take 275mm wide tires. I also bought my rear flare kit from JCR. The rear flares are the SCCA style(I believe-its been 5+ yrs ago).
Racin_Jason
Fast Frog, If you dont mind me asking, what did you pay for the rims? They sound like exactly what im lookng for. i plan on doing the big style ZG flares and always liked the look of the classic centerlines on the early Z's. Do you have pics? Would love to see them. I need to get rims n tires soon but need to find a good deal with width and mean looks in 15 or 16" Thanks Jason
Guest Fast Frog
Jason: I think I paid around $650 for the set of 4 from JCR. I was told by Sandy Cook (5 yrs ago)that JCR may not be offering them much longer. You can kinda see them on my car on the Featured Cars section of this website. Phantom
You can go to Center Line today and order wheels to fit your car. I got 4 16x7's from them 3 years ago for $800. Custom made to my lug pattern and my offset. I would imagine the new forged wheels could also be ordered that way but will cost a buttload more. Racin_Jason
Not a bad price really.. I cant get to the pics right now but i think i remeber you having the newer style centerlines. Do they make the old school solid with rivets style rims in our bolt pattern and offset these days? What sizes do these come in? I would like to get a set of 16x7-8" front and 16x10" rear in polished if possible. Also, what offset is needed front and rear for running these sizes with stock struts? Thanks again, Jason ITS ALMOST READY TO FIRE....FINALLY!
