Guest qwikrex
This has got to be the one of those age old dilemas. Should I do an auto, or a 6spd? Maybe some of you who've done the swap could answer these questions? Which tranny did you choose? Why did you choose it? How happy are you with your decision? Have you switched once you drove the car for a while? Any regrets with the tranny you choose? Personally, I really think the Auto is going to be my best bet. The car is going to be like 99% street driven, and maybe MAYBE taken to the track for some fun weekends now and again. Plus, I'd like for it to be something my wife can feel "comfortable" driving. On the other hand, I feel like I'm cheating myself out of a lot of "driving excitement" by not getting a 6spd. Any thoughts? Thanks!
iaconsultants
I have done some of the older swaps with both Automatic and Standard transmissions but not the 6spd or the 700R4 or newer overdrives. I have driven each of the last two mentioned. I would say the standard is more fun but that is more for what I like and the control. On the other hand the Automatic is what I will be placing in my conversion, which is due to the fact that I am not the only one driving the car and my wife does not care to learn to drive a standard. If you plan on like the Turbo 350 - then I would say it is good for the 1/4 mile but you will be replacing it on a regular basis or the rearend. I would recommend trying to find the Engine and Transmission together and I would probably say go with the Automatic since anyone can drive it and you have a lower probability of breaking things in the drive line. Hope this helps because I have been going through the same thing and I am going the Automatic route. Take care Robert
j260z
one thing i have noticed is that there are more of the auto trannys (4L60E) in the junkyards than manual ones (T5, T56). so if you are needing to replace a tranny or get parts it would also be cheaper to go auto. Tim240z
If I were to do it over, I may be very tempted to use the auto box. Being able to set shift points and shift characteristics via programming the PCM is pretty attractive.
Guest qwikrex
Thanks for endulging the question! Looks like I'll have to go with the auto. When I weigh out the pro's and con's the only one the manual has in it's favor is "It'll be fun to bang through 6 gears", other than that, the auto comes ahead, or they're equal. Thanks again! love-my-V8-280Z
You have over looked a few things. Im strongly suport the 6 speed manual. For one did you know the manual is rated at 450 lbs of torqe? When you wear out the clutch its not a whole new trans! And dont forget when you have a manual you get to drive the car, not just push a pedal down. A little girl can drive that. Wind it out or drop it a gear when you deside you want some torqe! In my mind it just don't compare.. Lets see you rev up a automatic and drop the clutch! Hope I have made you think some more.
