Guest myth66
It's really rusty and the clutch is totally gone but I'm excited . I traded it with a guy for some stereo speakers. It's an 82 280zx. non turbo but the engine seems to still be in really great shape, it runs strong. Just thought I'd share that and see if I can get any words of wisdom on where to begin or what to do with it. I want it to be fast but still be a daily driver. I'd like to get rid of the rust too. EvilRufusKay
Congrats!!! How rusty is REALLY rusty? Where is the rust? Just body or structural? I would fix the clutch and drive the snot out of it and have some fun. If there is alot of rust it wont be worth the time/money to fix. IMO of course. Guest myth66
It's kinda hard to tell since the paint is almost the same color but there is alot of rust in the usual places the floorboard on the drivers side is gone and someone welded in a steel plate in its place the doors are rusted though on the bottom in some places and the fenders look like they've already been bondo'd and they are starting to rust again. I was thinking of doing a 240z hybrid and just using the engine out of this one. That seems to be the popular thing to do. But there are just too many nice things on the body I want to keep (power windows and mirrors, rear disc brakes, rack and pinion A/C power steering, T top)
datsunlover
Well if you found a suitable 240 Z (not too much rust), you could cut the t tops out of the zx and put them in the 240, take the motor trans, rearend and disks too.. Maybe even find a way to use the power window motors in the 240 (my 280 has 3 holes around the window crank; looks to me like a power window motor could be instaled there..) Just my thoughts.. Congrats on your new (to you) Z
Guest bastaad525
If it's really rusty it would not be worth trying to fix... the money spent fixing it could just as easily get you another similiar car w/o the rust. Rust is, unfortunately, one of the most expensive things to take care of on a car. Do like I did when I had my rusty ZX. Start building up the motor/drivetrain. Drive the hell out of it. And always keep your eyes open for a good deal on another Z/ZX that maybe has a lot of miles or blown engine or whatever but with a clean body. It took me 6 years to find mine... a very clean 240 that was all apart, no interior, motor had a lot of miles and hadn't run in 13 years, but straight body and nothing more than surface rust... I picked it up for $250. Anyways you find that good deal and then swap your built engine over... swapping them is EASY in these cars, usually can swap the whole drivetrain in a day or two. And the added bonus is if you find a clean 240 to drop your ZX drivetrain into you'll be losing about 600lbs and end up with a much quicker car. Guest myth66
That sounds like a good plan. Just enjoy it while I've got it and wait for something better to come along that I can drop everything into. Thanx
