I was wondering if someone could point me in a direction (webpage) on how to do a 350 swap step by step? If there isnt any, could somone who has done one help me out? I am planning on buyin an 84-89 300ZX, and i want to put a 350 in it...jus dont quite know how to do it yet. Will i have to get a diff rear end, or will the stock rearend hold?? is there any frames from a car that will work, or do i have to build a frame?? Any help will be appriciated.

That link to the 350 swap in the Z31 seems to be broken. Big bummer.

Since no one else has done this, I will volunteer to say, "Go to http://www.jagsthatrun.com and order the manual - money well spent it will be".

I haven't done any kind of swap except for L24 to L28 (Not for lack of ambition, just lack of dollars). But that is what everyone says. The JTR book is packed full of zcar V8 swapping knowledge goodness. Although it is slanted towards early Zs....

Okay, a couple of things. First, I don't think anyone here has done a 300Z yet. First issue will be - does the motor fit? It ought to be much like a 280ZX swap but the hood may be a bit lower.

Does anyone know if th e300ZX motor from those years fits in an earlier Z? I think it does. So - motor mounting will probably be like a 280ZX swap ala Scarab. IF that's true Hooker makes the mounts you can use.

Don't know about hood clearance. Don't know about trans tunnel but a hammer will work. Don;t know if it will clear the rack or not or how you'll use the power steering.

IF you've never done a swap before, and this sounds liek the case, consider doing a swap that's well documented. If you do the 300ZX you'll be pioneering new ground. How do you know a pioneer? He's the one with arrows in his back! In other words, you'll probably find problems and have to engineer solutions unless you can find someone who's already done this. You might be better off finding an easier swap..

As for the rear. We use LSD diffs from those years in the older cars. As such you should be able to swap on a 280ZX R200 flange mount and use the Neapco driveshaft adapter that "we" all use. The rear isn't likely to be your problem...

Oh yeah - have you considered emissions laws in your state? I chose a 1972 240 for my swap so I wouldn't have to worry about emissions. An 84-89 300ZX is likely to have all sorts of emissions worries. Unless this is race only be sure to research this BEFORE you buy ANYTHING. Don't throw your money away if you can help it....

Good luck, keep us posted, we'll try to help - but you're doing a swap that I don't think anyone here has done.

I am putting a 350 into my '84. What transmission do you want to use? From what I have read here, the stock R-200 rearend will be strong enough to handle about anything you want to drop in. I removed the V-6 and the engine wiring harness. When the v-6 is out there is a lot of room for a chevy. The biggest prob seems to be with the left exhaust and the steering. I'm using block huggers, but I've heard that the stock iron manifold will clear the steering. Height is tight, but the engine will fit under the hood. Hood clearance is a problem for me , but that's because I'm running a vertex mag and stack injection, which is tall.

SteveR and Darthmentos are doing this swap, and have pics posted somewhere on here. For the most part, it doesn't seem to be too hard to do. Use the search for 300zx. I'll try toput the pics I have in my personal gallery. If there are any questions I can help you with, just PM me.

I just finished putting in my motor mounts today, and it was INCREDIBLY simple once we got it figured out. Here's how I did it. I bought a universal crossmember with motor mounts here..

http://www.tperformance.com/street_rod_store/3700/universal_crossmember_motor_mounts/

and then I cut out everything between the 2 mounts.

I cut out the old mount towers.

Line end caps up with old inner welds on the crossmember.

Weld down the endcaps.

Line up the mounts.

Weld them in.

Hard to explain in writing, but if you use this method, and are at all technically or mechanically inclined, you'll see what I mean. :)

Oil pan cleared rack by about 1/2 an inch. I dunno about intake yet, but I'm crossing my fingers. We'll see.
