Going Insane: please help.

Ok, here is the deal. I have a 72 240 that I bought in somewhat rough shape. When I got it, many of the lights didn't work, along with the heater, and the horn. It had an aftermarket stereo with a nice-ish head unit, a non functional cd changer in the glove compartment, and two small speakers right behind the seats. I took it to my mechanic who got some of the lights working, but in the process seems to have disconnected the stereo. My main concern at the time was the lights, so I fooled around with it and got all of the lights working. At this point I realized that the connector for the headunit had dissapeared, leaving me with no way to power the stereo. In addition, I have no idea where to begin wiring a horn. I am not even really concerned about a heater, but it would be nice to get it working. Basically, everything under my dash is a mess and I need to get a horn to pass inspection (legal and from the parents). I have thought about using a painless kit, but at this point with all the lights working and with the car needing to be driven daily pretty soon, I would rather just somehow get the horn and stereo working with the existing wiring. Oh yea, and the car has drained the new battery I put in so I have to get it charged before I do anything. Basically I am asking you guys to give any advice or knowledge you have in wiring the horn and the stereo, because at this point I am kinda lost and very frustrated. Thank you.

Sound to me like you have the makings of a nitemare in the works. I hate trying to fix a butcher job someone else did. If it's too bad, I'll tear everything out and wire it my way. I suspect you have a test lite. How about a continuity tester? An OHM meter? Make some jumper wires with aligator clips, as you will prolly need them. Take a two prong flasher , connect some leads to it with aligator clips on it. Use this for trying to ferrit out your short that's draining the battery. As far as wiring goes, try this link. It's helped me, and you can print it out. Someone may be able to steer you to a better place for a wiring diagram. Good luck.

Very often a horn wont work simply because of a bad ground. Get a test light and connect it to a known good ground, the battery ground is best if the test light can reach it if not use a long wire with clips like 305240 mentioned. Touch the test light to the positive terminal of the battery to make sure the test light is working (got light?).

Disconnect the horn, and stick the test light into the horn lead you disconnected. Put the light in a spot where you can see it and hit the horn. If you get a light either the horn is not grounded because of corrosion between the horn bracket and the mounting surface, or the horn is bad.

Good Luck!!

actually, upon inspection of the car, I dont believe there is a horn in the car. I think I will have to completely wire up a horn, a whole circuit. What do you think would be the easiest way to go about this.
