Guest Darthmentos
Does anyone know of a guide or kit for Small block chevy to Z31 crossbreeding? Id hate to reinvent the wheel if there is already a kit available. Cheers....
Guest greimann
There are no kits and nobody that I know of, that is active on this board, is doing one. If you do one, please document and post pics!

Guest Darthmentos
Thanks guys. we are going to do full picture documentation of the conversion and already hit our first snag. We got a heads up on a camaro iroc 5-speed, but it turned out to be a v-6 model that had an IROC cover plate....blah. Now looking at a muncie m21 to see if that will fit. Guest greimann
I'd say stick with a 5 or 6 speed unless this is a drag strip only car. You are going to really want the OD.
Chaparral2f
I sure hope you get some pictures up soon, I am just starting my '84 z31. Right now I'm doing suspension. I can't start on the engine until it is licenced for the next couple of years. (Don't ask, it has to do with smog laws) Good luck finding a five speed. MYRON
There is a guy that used to hang out on this board alot named Stan Carpenter. He was working on one, but I lost touch with him along time ago. You may use the search engine and look under "carpenter". I know he had a pretty bad accident also and you may look for some old post about the accident that he had. You might be able to find his email address that way. Guest Darthmentos
Talked to salvage guy today. He says the input shaft is the larger diameter which is for V8's , so the splines on one of my v6 clutches match, but the diameter is too small for it to slide on.... He suggests taking the transmission to my store and looking at a clutch from a late 80's ck pickup. This seems logical as the old pressure plate in the bargain doesn't even look close to what a v6 plate looks like. He has trans , bellhousing and flywheel to match it. I am leery of it because of the input not matching my disc. we will experiment on a used motor he has in the shop to see whether it would work out ok.It has breifly crossed my mind to make a 3/8" flat adapter to fit the V-8 to the stock 5-speed. this may prove to be a really bad idea, so we're still hunting. Only will adapt the trans as a last resort. The wiring looks straightforward in that the Z's and the SBC starters are wired very similar. HEI seems the obvious choice, as the engine measures 29 5/8" and the bay measures 31". It's going to be close. we might have to use a mallory with separate coil to fit. We will use original ZX gauges and senders for simplicity and ease of troubleshooting. All factory FI wiring will be disconnected and harnessed up for a clean look.AZt the very least if the V* thing doesnt work we could always build the cracked head 6 thats in in...............thoughts? Heck no. If one thing doesn't work try another, but I want the V8 now. This is my Z we're talking about BTW. For those asking, we've got a few "before" pics. But that's it so far. Trying to gather up the engine and tranny first, before we dig in. But, yeah, I plan on uploading LOTS of pics as the project goes on. I'll more than likely throw up a website for it as well. Here's just a couple of them: http://livethenow.com/tempdir/zcar/ Mine is the one with the chrome wheels, closer to the house. There's nothing there pertaining to the conversion yet though. Good news Darth! I'd rather go with the T5 even if it is a from a truck. If we can get it to work, that is.
Guest Darthmentos
We now have confirmation that the transmission is a V-6 model. My Information is that this transmission will stand up to 400 hp . Since i am reasonably certain that the engine we are making wont deliver that kind of numbers , and pretty sure the right side IRS driveshaft will scatter under less of a load than that, we're gonna take a calculated risk and try it. Guest Darthmentos
Heh, didn't know you were shadowing my underworld activities , bro. Gonna be a few days before we can get the clutch plates and transmission in the same space to check out what bullet says. I dont trust him yet, but if rod says that will work, I beleive it. He's blown up more combinations than both of us have tried.
