Guest 400HP280z
i got an 81 zx for free. i am going to put the 5 sp in my 260. i was wondering if i should just put the motor in the 260 also. i want to keep it carbed so i won't have to deal with the wiring( main problem with the 280zx). if i do swap the motor what if any will i gain in HP and Torque? oh and i will only be using the block, head, cam from the ZX. the carbs intake and access. will all be 260 pieces. oh and will i need to use the 260 driveshaft or Zx? JMortensen
You might consider swapping the head from the 260 onto the 280 block. That will up the compression and you'll need high octane gas (92), but you'll get a little more out of the swap. Regardless, you'll feel a noticeable difference from the displacement increase. The driveshafts should be the same, so keep one as a spare. Jon
Phyte
I just put an 81 5 speed in my 74 260 last weekend. One warning is that the cross member is different, the 81 tranny is slightly offset so use the 81 cross member. It bolts right up. Also I had an automatic, and the shifter on the 81 tranny was about 2 inches further forward so I had to take the console out. If yours is an auto right now you'll have to cut out some metal out of the trans tunnel. All in all it was a really easy swap. Phyte
