Guest jdllaugh
I'm looking at a rebuilt 350 engine, it has a .040 over block with ARP bolts in the mains, the rods are TRW heavy duty rods, the pistons are TRW forged, the cam is a Comp Extreme Energy 274, the heads are 487X 1971 LT1 heads that have new valves, new guides, seats, springs, and seals. The 274 cam reportedly has Lift: .552''/.555'' and RPM Range: 1800-6000. The 487X had 2.02/1.60" valves. How does this sound? I'm not familiar with that Comp cam or head combo. I've heard that early 70s LT1 engines were pretty sporty but really don't know anything about them. Any comments up or down would be appreciated. Mike C
The 70 LT-1 is a stomper with 11:1 compression, closed chamber big valve heads, and a one year only mechanical cam grind. The 71-72 is still a good motor, but probably 50 horsepower down on the 70 stock with its 9:1 compression, open chamber heads, and different cam. Stock motors compared to each other. (They are rated differently as well, the 71 is SAE nets while the 70 is SAE gross)If it is a good price and it is complete (has the intake, etc.) it should be a good motor. Guest jdllaugh
This is a rebuilt long block without intake. Casting numbers indicate it's a 70s block, the same type used on the 71 Corvette. I assumed aftermarket intakes, like Edelbrock, would fit just fine. I heard about this engine through the grapevine. Haven't talked with the owner. I just want to have ammunition when we get down to dickering. Price is open at this point, but probaby around $1k.
Guest zfan
I may be wrong here but if they are LT1 heads it would have to be an LT1 block as they had reverse cooling? Again I'm not positive but thought they all did! Mike
Guest jdllaugh
I'm talking about the early 70s LT-1 -- not the Gen II LT1 of the 90s.
Guest Anonymous
James: here is some Devil's advocate ammo. The cam is too high lift for my tastes.Would not make a good street idle. I cannot find any specific profile on the cam. How old is the cam......3973487X cylinder casting also comes up with a 75 cc chamber with 1.94/1.50 valves ( no devil advocate;I actually have a set of these) Let us check all those casting #'s again. How many times has the engine been bored/ I wanted to do a 383 stroker in the future and the going rate on that application is .030 over bore. Not sure if I can get .040 stroker pistons.....Do not agree with anything ..complain and question and listen very closely and sometime it pays to be a little ignorant (I got some deals on some antique guns being stupid).
