Guest 2fortyZ
the starter on my 73 Z has been acting up lately. im not sure if its the starter itself, the solenoid, or some relay, but almost everytime i start my car, the starter clicks and doesnt turn the engine over. i have to click it like 5-10 times before the engine actually starts to turn over. does anyone know what is going on with this? please help!! -Kevin
datsunlover
Check your cables where they conect to the starter, and the battry too. Sounds like a bad/loose/corroded conection somewhere to me..
72zcar
motor is L28..stock Ok I have a starter that goes "zing" (turns) but does not thrust forward. Have to try it a few times before it engages the flywheel. And its getting worse. It does not grind..just a kinda quiet zing..zing zing then it starts. Have put in three different starters and they do the same thing. This all started when we put in a different motor out of a auto z, we used the old flywheel, old starter, new pilot bushing. Z never did this before with old motor. thanks bob
Guest 2fortyZ
does anyone of a starter relay of some sort that possibly could be going out? i have checked the cables a few times, they arent corroded. could possibly be the starter solenoid? datsunlover
72zcar; My 280zx did EXACTLY the same thing. A temporary fix was to take apart the starter solenoid, clean it up, and spin this little contact ring (proper term?) around a bit. What is happening is this; the starter motor gets power from a little 'arm' that makes a conection by pushing on the ring when the sonenoid is engaged (by the key) , therefore starting the motor and pushing out the gear at esentialy the same time. When the arm/ring gets worn, it kicks out too soon (befor you let off the key), and the motor shaft drops back into the starter. Thats the 'zing' sound you hear. This is hard to describe... but if you take off the starter and take it apart, you'll see what I mean. I eventually changed mine out for a newer one though, as it stsrted doing the same thing about 2 months later. 2fortyz; Yah, it might be that the solenoid is sticking, or has a bad conection internaly.. you could try jumping the two contacts with a screwdriver (make sure the car is in nutral!!!) and if it cranks the engine over, the problem is elsewhere in the wiring....ugh.. Hope this helps guys
72zcar
datsunlover, thanks for the info but we put three different starters on it and they all do the same thing. One was brand new...bob
datsunlover
You say 3 'diffrent' starters... were any of them new, or were they just siting around? I know it sounds odd, but if you didnt know for sure the other's were 'known good' then it's at least possible they were all shot too. Heck, if you've got 2 or 3 lying around, try dissasembling them all, and build one out of the best condition parts! I say this because I ended up going through 2 starters that both did the 'zing' thing, got pissed and ripped them both apart, which led to me rebuilding one from 2. Just an idea..
