Ok guys, more dumb question from your resident new guy. I've been looking at 'rebuild kits' from Summit Racing, JEGs, and spdcc2000.com. So far JEGS is the only one that has a kit for a 97 vortec motor. and they want $829.99 (but i'm unclear of what all from this kit I need, and if there is a better place/price to buy. I need to send my block to the machine shop but the shop doesnt want it until I have the kit (they said they need some parts to make sure they get it right (i dont know what they need or mean)). Can anyone tell me what it is I'm looking for and if jegs is the best price I'll get. cause if I'm spending that much just for the rebuild kit I might as well spend the extra $400 and get the 383 kit.

Any thoughts/comments/advice is very welcome as I seem a little down on this matter.

You'll need, at a minimum:

Pistons (you'll need to know your bore size before ordering)

Ring set (to match piston size)

Bearing set (mains and big ends)

Full gasket set (don't cheap out here)

You should be able to use your existing crank, connecting rods etc.

Optional:

Cam and cam bearings, and lifters

aluminum water pump

oil pump

oil pan with windage tray

Your machine shop will need the new pistons so that they can ensure that they rebore tot he correct size to match.

If you need a new crank (if yours is toast), then you might as well get a 400 stroke crank and 6 inch rods, and pistons to match.

BTW, get a catalogue from PAW (Performance Automotive Warehouse), or look in any hot rod mag, they always have a 2 page ad.

For the best rebuild you can get, if they are a good shop and your aiming for performance, they will patch the piston to a bore and bore it appropriately. Pistons aren't going to come exactly 4.030" for example in other words, so a good shop will "do it right" and measure individually, etc etc
