Sup guys,

This guy is offering to sell me his engine but I'm not sure if it is a engine worth buying. here's the info he gave me: 2 bolt main. it had a recent rebuild according to the previous owner and after tearing it down, i can see its true. the bores are excellent, shiny and no ridge at the top,and the bearings looked fine.its covered and gets oiled and turned. the crank, rods and pistons are still asembled in the block. never have checked the casting numbers to verify it origin.

Should I worry about the unknown origin of the casting numbers? How much of a difference is there between a 2 bolt and 4 bolt?

dont worry about the casting numbers

if its as clean as you say, i dont think it matters. a four bolt is great if your running boost or squeeze or going to stay at a high rpm for a long time, like in autox, otherwise, a two bolt in that kind of shape like you describe will be just fine, is it forged steel or cast crank. i had a 327 two bolt main with the obligatory forged steel crank, beat that thing senseless, and ran 100 shot on it on a few occasions. i dont think you will have reliabilty issues at all, knowing what it is would be nice, but you can measure bore and stroke since its dissassembled and know what your running with, besides who cares about where it came from, its going in a car where it was never offered as an option anyway! :D

How much does he want and what all is included? Distributor, alternator, carbs/FI?

I prefer 4 bolt mains. You can build a strong motor with 2 bolt mains, but if you want to build a monster one day, you will have a solid block to start from.

Casting numbers may not help much. You may find that the engine was used in various cars/trucks in several different years. The head casting numbers may tell you something.

You may be looking at an engine that, stock, only put out about 190-220 HP. Kinda defeats the purpose of putting a heavier V8 in.

The guy wants $300 OBO. I'm not sure if it's forged crank or not, I e-mailed him just right now. hopefully he responds soon. How much hp you think i can get out of this engine if I build it from what it has already?

Well there are alot of factors that go into hp estimates. What are the specs on your heads. 300+ hp is fairly easy to obtain with the proper cam intake carb and headers combo. Im sure some of the guys here can pipe up with some wonderful specs for you to look for in those items. Good luck. For that price I think I would buy it if it were me I would.

ok here's what he replied on the e-mail:

the crank is most likely cast

it had ahuge roller cam in it before but it is int in there now so the horesepower will be determined by the cam and heads you use on it

no alternator or distributor, may have a starter around for it

Print yourself copies of these web pages to help you indentify Chev heads and block Mortec.com web page and web page $300.00 for a used bare 2 bolt main block is a little steep without heads Pass on this..The cylinders could be bored out .060 and if there is a crank it to be turned under to the max. I would not buy a block bored out over .020 with a crank turned more than .010 under. Even the shiney ones could be worn out.. Usually the only way to find out is to measure (micrometer) the cylinders and crank.** Re edit The Moretec.com page is coming Korean text for penis enlargement
