Guest greimann
I am about ready to pull my motor to re-cam and fix some oil leaks. In the past I have used sensor safe RTV for the typical areas around the intake manifold and oil pan. I am taking great care to prepare the surfaces properly and letting the RTV cure for several days before putting the engine into service, but after a few years even the best RTV starts to weep oil. Is there any other sealant that people have used with success that is an alternative to RTV that is impervious to oil?
Tim240z
Greimann, I have used hylomar with good results, although I generally only use it when the parts will come into contact with gasoline/gasoline vapors because, unlike silicon, hylomar is impervious to fuel. I have never used it for the intake though, but I'm sure it would work well. Tim
denny411
I also have used the Hylomar ,it works good for intake although I haven`t personaly seen it after a couple years. The best stuff I have ever used can be gotten at a GM dealership(i can`t recall the exact name) but it is the same black RTV that the factory uses on the oil pans and valve covers in place of gaskets. The label on the tube is aqua green and the the tube is white, sorry I couldn`t be more specific. With this stuff you wouldn`t have to wait to run the engine It will cure completely long before you have the engine reassembled. If you get it on your fingers you will feel it get hot as it cures (similar to body filler)also get it off of your hand immediatly because once it cures the only thing you can do is wait.I had to go to a wedding with this stuff in all the creases of my fingers. I hope this helps you
Guest Anonymous
when i was a driving a truck for kragen all the shops would use forma gasket. its a high tack glue that i know sticks to what you want comes off when you want and holds for a long while. i got a question for the manifolds? as i know of the lower manifold gasket from felpro has a metallic seal that does not need rtv. last mani swap i did i didnt use rtv. ran it 2k and no leak. but the trick i did was have the machine shop drill a wire ring around jackets and channels for the wire trick. matt
Guest greimann
At the suggestion of Mr. Denny411, I picked up a tube of the GM Goodwrench silicone sealer. I haven't used it yet, but if the warning label is any indication of its potential, then this is some kick ass stuff. Get this: " May cause burns..... May be absorbed through the skin and cause reversible narcosis...... May cause hemolytic anemia........ May cause methemaglobinemia"! Holy crap I'm afraid to take the cap off! denny411
Oh Yea...It kicks ass alright.I garrantee you`ll be pleased Just remember to keep the cap on whenever your not using it,It will cure literally in minutes. The only trouble I`ve ever had with it is if I left a little on the theads when I put the cap on,it reacts w/ the air and I would have to use an exacto knife to clean out the tip of the tube Good Luck

denny411
Greimann, Do you happen to have the part# for the sealant that I recomended? I went to our local GM dealer today and they don`t stock any GM brand rtv, but the guy at the counter said if I can get a #, he`ll track it down. Guest greimann
Funny you should resurrect this thread, I was thinking of giving a 1 year update in Feb.. so far no leaks! The part # is 12346192. Sells for $8.95 a tube.
denny411
Thanks for the # and the update. I used it for the oil pan gasket on a Mr Two almost three years ago, and it has yet to leak a drop.
Guest Anonymous
Are you sure that a tube of GM sealant #12346192 does not require a medical prescription ?
denny411
I`m not sure about the prescription, but it maybe considered a controled substance
