280ZX Transmission Mount

Recommended Posts

I need a little help. I've been an unregistered viewer here for quite a long time and finally, after a minor disaster, decided to v8 my ZX. I have purchased the JTR manual(twice) and have a large pile of parts to throw in my car(1980 280ZX). My question regards the trans mount. I'll be using a 350 and a TH700R4 trans. What is the best way to mount the tranny if I can't use the JTR mount? Thanks in advance for your help.

350 Deam N: Welcome on your first post about 280ZX tranny mounts for a 700R4 Tranny. Some 280ZX members will be a lot more qualified to answer your question. You can use the very simple GM auto trans mount that attaches with two bolts to the tranny and with a single bolt to the aftermarket cross member.I am not sure if the JTR tranny ceoss member will not bolt up with a few modifications to the 280ZX. I have been researching this subject and still a little confused on the subject.I understand that the SBC engine motor mount fits right over the front cross member towers for the Z engine mounts and basically with appropriate spacers/adapter and chevy mounts can be bolted in. . MSA web page have SBC V8 conversion parts for the 280 ZX (motor mounts and 700R4tranny mounts for $225.00)and no doubt this 12 pounds of parts could be home fabricated for $10.00 in a few houts) 1-800-321-3777 Johns Cars also has a kit.

Hey now take it easy on the non-skilled-fabrication-guys!(is that a legitimet word? :D ) j/k Yeah I bought that kit from MSA. If you need just the tranny mount I have it and I dont plan on using it since I am using a T56 transmission. $20 and its yours!

while I have no answer on your mounting question, just wanted to say welcome to the board, and it was good talking to you yesterday.

For the record this is the first other person I've found (or that has found me in this case) in my area that is doing a hybrid swap. Maybe one of you pros can come down south and show us what a hybrid is made of? hehehe

once again, welcome to the board. look forward to meeting you soon.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. I have learned alot about the Z swaps reading all of your posts for the past couple of years. But sadly too few people were doing ZX's. I bought a '80ZX a couple of years ago just to drive and enjoy but just when I didn't need it the car decided to have a bonfire without me. So to make a long story short, I decided to go with a V8 rather than repair the L28. I hope to be able to start on my swap soon(within a month) and will surely need some dumb questions answered. Thanks again guys as has been said before "This is the BEST swap forum on the web!!!"

Hey Guy, you sound like the man I need to talk to. I can handle fitting the motor to the ZX frame, but I would really like to buy that MSA tranny mount you have. It sounds like there really IS a Santa Claus after all. Lets see if we can make this deal. Its time make this ZX a runner again(faster and better than ever before).

Thanks,

Bob

Bob.... bad news the tomahawk grinch stole the christmas Msa mount. The purchased mount will be on its way to me tommorrow.By your last post, there was no mention that you wanted the mount after it was offered and I gave instructioins to give you first choice. Give me about a month and I will fabricate one for you at the same price plus shipping unless this mount is a lot more complicated than I anticipate. ljohnson97438@yahoo.com I want the mount to copy and will put the dimensions and a rough diagram on Hybrid Z. I have no 280 ZX

Tee Zee, No harm no foul. I had to get off the web quick to take care of home business so I had no real opportunity to reply to all of the replies to my post. I would be interested in getting a mount from you though(you are a GOOD fabricator right?). I have very limited fabrication skills. I would like to get this ZX up and back on the road again so any help/advice you have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bob

Are telling me you've done SIX of these? That must mean you just don't like ZX's. I knew I should have kept my old clapped out 75 280Z. I just didn't know what I was doin-I swear! Since you're that good I'll get back to you on that trans mount. like they say the early bird gets the worm or trans mount in this case.

Thanks again,

Bob

I made six JTR mounts and been working on my Tomahawk way too long..plus 3 other body kits. Greimanns 280 ZX got me interested in collecting ZX parts. I have a lot of collections......

I usually jump in when I see ZX or my name, but in this case I am no help with the trans mount because I am running a T5 straight up with a #ahem# "Junkyard Wars" style of trans mount. The site in the link below may be of help in other areas though for Mr. 350DreamN.
