Georgia Flash
I bought my used 700R the other day from a salvage yard for $325.00. The old guy told me that it came from a running 87 Chevy Van. I still have to go back today and get some things they forgot to give me. Does anyone have a link to a site that will help me run the numbers on my tranny? I went to http://www.highperformancecars.com but that site only helped me with determining the correct year of my tranny, it is a 1987 model. The web site didn't give any other help with the other numbers. I have also visited http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com and that site has a wealth of info. By the way for those of you running this tranny, did you use the dip stick that came with the tranny or did you go with something custom? How about the linkage for the shifter? Guest 77vegasz
http://www.bowtieoverdrives.com is all about 700r4 and 200r4. They have good technical info as well as parts. If you have a 27 spline trans, I have a new 2500-2700 rpm stall converter that I wil let go cheap. I killed the trans before I could put it in. Guest 77vegasz
Sorry I missed that fact that you had been to bowtie overdrives before. I used the dip stick from a camaro, and had to bend it by hand to get it to work. I had trouble with it being too tall and the hood hitting the dip stick, but I cut the tube, and top portion of the dipstick a corresponding amount and it worked out perfectly. Lokar offers flexible braided steel dip sticks as well. They are available at http://www.jegs.com or http://www.summitracing.com Jon
spdsk8r
I used the dipstick and tube from the van that my motor came from. I just removed the top portion from the tube and shortened the dipstick a corresponding amount. For marking the full line on the dipstick I followed Bowtie Overdrives suggestion and installed the dipstick with the trans pan off and marked the stick at the mounting surface for the pan. For the shifter, I used a shifter from a Camaro. I had to change the lever (where the shifter cable/linkage attaches) on the trans to the Camaro lever. Georgia Flash
Thanks, I will see if I can pull the shifter from a Camaro today. I never made it back yesterday. I was wondering, the electrical connector on the right side (passenger side) of the tranny, is that for the back up lights? The salvage yard did not give me the plug that goes into the connector. I also need to get the speedometer cable, nope they did not give that to me either. The shop was closing that day and the owner was under the impression that I had all of this stuff and was just replacing one 700R for another. spdsk8r
I don't remember my trans having a plug in on the passenger side. My backup light switch and neutral safety switch are built into the Camaro shifter that I used (94 Camaro).
spdsk8r
I'll check tonight to see if mine has a connector on the pass. side. My trans also came from a 87 Van.
Georgia Flash
Rick, My mistake, the connector is on the driver's side of the transmission. It is a four prong plastic connector. I just got back with my shifter. I think it came from a Camaro or Firebird. It has a long electrical connector on it maybe that is the neutral safety/back up connector. spdsk8r
The four prong connector on the drivers side is for the lock up converter. I used the Bowtie Overdrive lockup kit, along with their TV Made Easy TV cable, and their 2200 stall converter. They work great.
spdsk8r
I'm not sure if your shifter is the same as mine, but my shifter's switch had six wires off it. The top two are large gauge, I used those for my neutral safety. They have continuity in Park and Neutral. The middle two wires have continuity when in reverse, guess what I used those for, and the bottom two wires also have continuity in Park and Neutral, I did not use these. I hope this helps. spdsk8r
For my speedo cable I used the Datsun cable housing and went to the local auto parts store and got a universal speedo cable core. I replaced the Datsun core with the universal core. This makes the cable compatible with the Chevy trans. Oh, on the Datsun cable housing, the trans end thread is very close to the Chevy thread. Its tight but does mate.
Georgia Flash
Thanks for the great info I am chugging along on this thing so maybe this might just be the year I get the V-8 in the car. I have decided to go the econo rout for now as in use what I have to get er done. I have a Holly carb from the long gone parts camaro/engine doner that I will use in the short run until I can get the Edelbrock carb I want. Use the mech fan instead of the electric fan that I want and so forth. My goal here is to get the engine in the car and running and go from there. Oh by the way I read on some web site that you can not get by with just an auxilery trans cooler for an auto transmission so I guess I will have to spend a little on a radiator with the hookups for the tranny lines.
