Guest xbangu
I have a 240Z with a 280ZX turbo engine in it. I just got it complete and lettingit run... When first start up the engine is running fine, with some dead fuel coming out of the exhaust. After about 10-15 min or so the engine shut itself off, and before it shut it self off... the engine is reving up and down between 1.3rmp -1.5rmp for a good 1 min at least. Then engine die out, and wwen I try to start it back up again the batt seem like it drain out. I charged back up and the same thing happen? could this be the batt or my alternator and how do I test these to thing to see if they are good?? thanks,
Guest 2slo4u
Obviously if the battery is dying to the point of your engine shutting off, it is not charging. I would take the battery to get it tested and if they say it is ok, put it back on the car. Check the battery voltage before you start the car. Now check it after you start it, it should go up to about 13.8 to 14 volts. If it doesn't go up, it will drop slowly while the car is running and that means the alternator voltage isn't making it to tbe battery. Check the fusible link for the alternator and see if it is burnt. I'm not sure where it is on the 240z, but I believe it is very close to the battery like on the 280's. Did you change the wiring for the alternator or is it the stock 240z alternator wiring? Brian
TomsCoupe
its probably the alternator because your car should still run if the alternator is working. charge the battery up, then start the car, pull the positive post off the battery, if it dies, its your alternator or wiring for the alternator. even without a battery, your alternator should produce anough power to run the car without the battery connected. datsunlover
Yup, and if you run it too long like that (dead batt, car running off alternator) it will kill the alt. Ask me how I know.. (3 cars this has happend to me! arrggg..) Likely, you will be ok if you fix this prob now, instead of letting it go.....
