Guest HP-Freak
I'm new here. And as all new people, I have a strange idea. I'm considering using a late 80's turbo 300ZX front suspension on a full fat fendered street rod. I'm really tired of seeing the generic Mustang II kits. They're everywhere, they're expensive and you still need to cut and weld. Z suspensions are much better than 1970 psuedo-Pinto technology. And yes, there's a ton of aftermarket MS II stuff, but you're still stuck with the same geometry. I'd prefer something more modern and better handling. Plus, this would match the rearend for the car. I'm using a turbo Z rear suspension with an Explorer IRS pumkin in the middle. I'm still piecing it together. Opinions? Possible problems? When I get farther along I'll have better questions. Building a street rod from scratch is a lot of assembling and disassembling the same parts until everything works together. Thanks
evildky
really!? seem you could find a better alternative, you'll have to fabricate an upper strut housing to mount it, seems kinda wasteful, whynot full custom tubular upper and lovers control arms? check out Ron Champions "how to buill and race a car for as little as $250" ok it's an english book and it's in form of pounds but I don't have a key for that, I find it helps get the wheels turning on such ventures, as for the Z31 irs with explorer pumpkin, why!? the semi trailing arm isn't the best set up there either, again you'll need upper strut mounts as well as a n upper spring pearch, and if you really want to use the Z31 set up whay swap the diff? I'd imagine you want it wider but the R200 diff can handle just about anything you can throw at it don't get me wrong I love the Z31 (was my first Z) but the suspension and brakes on them are nothing special, I've considered a mustang 2 front and jag IRS swap into my datsun (then I realixed it would be very exxpensive and a huge pain in the arse), I wouldn't bother with all the work just to get Z31 gear when there are so many setups out thare that would be better and easier and cleaner
Doug71zt
If you really want to do it, consider the Z32 suspension all the way around. It certainly handled better and comes with better brakes, a heavier diff, etc. The rear is a subframe that could be mounted complete. They are relatively cheap on Ebay or the JY. Good luck - and keep us posted! Doug
SHO-Z
I would go to factory five racing and use there front suspensions set up. You can use the late model Mustang lower A arm, brakes, steering rack and use their upper A arm addapter. They also have a set-up for an IRS using the T-Bird IRS as a donor.
