how to bend the round choke rods for adjustments on 71 SU's?

ok, i need to bend those 2 round choke rods on each carb so the arm contacts the throttle tang quicker when applying the choke. they are 71 SU's.

how do you go about bending them and have them both be the same for each carb and in sync?

in fact how do you even bend the darn things without having to take them off and do it on the workbench?

I assume that you are referring to the “fast idle” adjustment arm. I recall using a pair of Vice-Grips and making the adjustment with the carbs still on the engine. The factory manual recommends bending this arm so that each throttle blade is opened .025". Measure the gap between the edge of the throttle blade and the throat with a [long] feeler gauge after you have lifted the piston up for clearance. Of course this is done with the engine off and with the air filter housing removed for access.

You can also make the adjustment more accurately with the engine running by using an air flow meter to equalize the air flow of each carb while maintaining a suitable fast idle rpm. 1500 rpm should be OK.

Use a pair of vise grips... you have to bend that one little rod... god it's hard to describe w/o a pic... it's a thin (maybe 1.5mm, maybe 2" long?) rod with an angle already bent into it... you either increase or decrease that angle to adjust the throttle plate opening. Anyways... I distinctly remember using a medium pair of vise grips. It's kind of trial and error to get them the same. I used a feeler gauge to measure the opening of the throttle plate on each carb and got them as close as I could. I didn't go to TOO much trouble to get them right as even in the Ztherapy "Just SU's" video didn't really stress them being exact.
