Guest motohead400
Hello everyone, I'm a newbe here (posting wise, although I've read TONS of helpful information) and the proud new owner of a 78 280Z pearl black edition in outstanding shape (which will be a V8 in a few years)! I was in the process of replacing the thermostat housing gasket (where the housing mates to the head) and pulling the wires off the sensors in the housing when one sensor broke due to the wire being corroded to the sensor. I have looked furiously for what exactly this sensor is to no avail. In the 280z fuel injection handbook it is called the thermal transmitter, and that is all I've been able to find. Long story short, it's the sensor on the front of the thermostat housing at about 1:00 in relation to the thermotime switch. I tried locating it in the online 280z microfiche at http://www.carfiche.com, but the particular page I need is a poor scan and I can't really read anything. I have no idea what this sensor does (meaning do I really need to replace it), and where to possibly purchase one (nismoparts.com maybe?). Could someone please enlighten me as to the purpose of this sensor? Also while I'm at it, would it be a good idea to replace the other sensors (thermotime switch and water temperature sensor)? zcarnut
Check the number of electrical connections to the sensor in question. If there is only one then this is the sensor that the TEMP gauge uses to operate. If there are two electrical connections then this is the thermal sensor used by the ECU to enrichen the mixture during engine warm up. Last time I checked at NAPA you could still get either one, if you wish to save some money by not buying a Nissan part. I'm a firm believer in only replacing parts that are defective. But you can do what you want
Guest motohead400
Thanks -- there's just one connection on the sensor -- one male prong about 1.5 mm in diameter and a little over 1cm long.
innerware
Yeah, as said you can run without it. It is just to the gauge. But it is nice having a working gauge. Mine was bad on my 78 when I bought it too. Enjoy, the black pearl is nice.
