Nissan-Fan
Hey guys, so i got my JTR manual, i have been reading up alot, and now i would like to go hunting for a engine. Specifically, im looking for a 4 Barrel Carbureted V8, Pref a 5spd but if the transmission and engine are good, anything will do. So, what cars should i be looking for at the yard (ill check to see if i can find anything their first) their are tons of cars their, i just need to know some that have the 350's in them. Thanks alot.
Guest Magnum Rockwilder
Stop looking in the junkyard and start looking for complete running vehicles. You can find running V8 cars/trucks with rough bodies for <$500, and you can use the engine, tranny, radiator, driveshaft yoke, tranny cooler, electric fans if there are any, and then sell or part out what's left. You can get $100 for most fullsize vehicles if you take them to a metal recycling center, or you might find a private buyer. NEVER assume a vehicle has a 350. I've seen cars with "5.7L" on the engine bay sticker, and semingly bone stock motors, but then you run the numbers on the block and it's a fxxxing 305. The numbers are on the driver's side top of the block near the firewall, where the engine and tranny meet. You'll have to crawl back there and scrape a 1/4" of grime away, but it's worth it. Get the # and do an internet search to see what it is. For a quick check, look down between the crank pulley and front of the engine for the timing pointer. 350's have a pointer at the 2 o' clock position in relation to the pulley, and 305's have it at 12 o' clock... BUT I've seen one or two 305's with a 2 o'clock pointer, so you can never be sure without running the numbers.
spdsk8r
What MR said. I got my motor in a 91 G-30 one ton van for $550. Pulled the motor, sold the body for $150 and the 4L80E trans for $500. Ended up with a rebuilt 350 four bolt main truck motor with <30K miles and $100 in my pocket. Shop wisely, it can be done.
Guest Stert
if you are looking for a complete new motor and trans i might think about selling my ZZ3 (350) crate engine with the 4 speed manual only 4,000 miles on both of them.
