G Gress Posted December 16, 2004 Share Posted December 16, 2004 Bought a car that must have been sitting under a pine tree for months. There are drops of pitch all over the horizontal surfaces of the body and they are hard as rock. I tried bug and tar remover, WD-40 and mineral spirits to no avail. I plan to repaint anyway but the paint is good enough to get by for awhile but I may just try lacquer thinner on a small area. Any other suggestions? zdmz Posted December 16, 2004 Share Posted December 16, 2004 Use Methanol. You may be able to get some at a pharmacy or go to the parts place and buy some DRYGAS. Guest Magnum Rockwilder Posted December 16, 2004 Share Posted December 16, 2004 Do NOT use lacquer thinnner. That stuff'll strip the paint off in a heartbeat. Try the alochol suggested above, and if that doesn't work you can try either brake fluid (make sure to rinse it off immediately) or wet sanding it with 2000 grit. I've done it numerous times, but just make sure to get the excess off as soon as your done and clean the area really good and re-polish/wax as needed so as to not damage the paint. This worked and did not damage the paint on my car. And I did that a few years ago. It still looks great in the areas. Can't even tell. dot Posted December 19, 2004 Share Posted December 19, 2004 I would try the methanol or isopropyl alcohol. (IPA). The latter is used as a disinfectant and can be purchased at the pharmacy. What your looking for is a water soluble solvent. Acetone is in this group but is a little harsh. The IPA will evaporate at slower rate giving you a longer working time.
