HarrisonTX
So guys.. heres whats up. I found on ebay a 283 crankshaft. The guy claimed it was for an army tank. I researched the numbers, and bought it. A 283 crank can be used to make a 302, heres the link http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7923454727&category=33616 now, i already have a daily driver, and a street/strip car, so i thought it was time to build a road car, or a touring car, and a 302 raps up really fast, and high, so it needs to be a light car. I first thought of corvette, camaro, or a monza. Then i remembered seeing an LS1, in a 240, and did a little research, i came to the conclusion that a 240 would be perfect, alot less wieght than a chevy, and it would be a pretty fun project. I got some info from the site "alteredz.com" he used a 327/t-5, the same tranny i plan to use. I do have a few questions tho 1. What years should i steer clear of? 2. is a 240, and better thana 260 or 280? 3. whats with those big ass front bumpers on some years 4. rear leaf, or rear coil springs? 5. do v8 z cars handle good at all? 6. in the kit from jtr, does that come with all the parts i'd need? 7. aside from moving the hood latch, what other mods are needed? 8. will a z rearend hold up to about 400hp?, if not, how much would a posi rearend run? do they have to be completly custom? 9. what is a good site for z parts, like bumpers and such? i will probably think of more questions. Thanks guys
GabeRoc
might i suggest as step one that you learn to use the 'new' features of this board - the search function. every question you asked has been answered more than once in the forums. search some, learn what is basic, then ask questions about the finer points. do this and not only will you like this forum, the forum will like you too. --gabe
Guest ON3GO
I do have a few questions tho 1. What years should i steer clear of? all are great years, hardest part is finding one thats in good enough shape 2. is a 240, and better thana 260 or 280? 240Z's are going to be lighter but the late 260Z's and 280Z's will be stiffer, i think a 240Z would be a better track car though 3. whats with those big ass front bumpers on some years 77 and 78 had the BIG bumpers, the 75 and 76 had big bumpers but not as big as the later year 280Z's 4. rear leaf, or rear coil springs? diff 5. do v8 z cars handle good at all? they handle great, the JTR setup does wonders, search and you will see plenty of ppl talking about this 6. in the kit from jtr, does that come with all the parts i'd need? not a V8 Z guy but search and you will find all the answers on this 7. aside from moving the hood latch, what other mods are needed? i dont think you need to remove the hood latch at all 8. will a z rearend hold up to about 400hp?, if not, how much would a posi rearend run? do they have to be completly custom? well no and yes.. people do it but a smart way is the Z31 300zx LSD rear end with 280zx turbo CV's and adapters.. you can buy a LSD diff from companys but most ppl on this site is all about doing it themselves or using other cars parts. check out http://www.modern-motorsports.com and http://www.zcarparts.com for some parts 9. what is a good site for z parts, like bumpers and such? http://www.zcarparts.com http://www.classicdatsun.com are a few of the main ones.. search this site (others will tell ya this over and over) and every answer you just asked and will ask will come up.. mike

Guest tony78_280z
On3GO had good answers. Except these two. 6. in the kit from jtr, does that come with all the parts i'd need? Goto their webpage I think they offer almost everything. I didn't use them and I wish I would have. 7. aside from moving the hood latch, what other mods are needed? I know that with an HEI Dizzy you can't use the hood latch. I smashed my first dizzy with the engine's first insert. I don't think there is enough room for any other dizzy with the hood latch. The motor is pushed far back and up as possible to make room for the steering bar (many headers and manifolds wont fit) the latch has to go. Get JTR. Guest ON3GO
ahh i didnt know that about the latch.. that sorta sucks.. thank god if i ever do a V8 Z it will be a LS1-LS6 mike
HarrisonTX
So, is the latch eliminated, or moved? i dont see too many with hood pins I was lookin at front end kits, bedcause some of those bumpers look soo shitty, i would have to change it, alot of those kits look kinda rice burner is, now i know these are pretty much nissan's but man, i dont want people to think ive got a ricer. like this one.. this is nice But this one, kinda debatable, kinda ricer, but kinda cool. I dont know
Guest tony78_280z
Oh I forgot to mention JTR makes some different kind of Hood latch. (Like I said, I don't know I didn't use them.) I think motorsports offers it too. I just went with hood pins for now. I'm gonna get a FG hood anyhow. But the old Z Latch has to go. Guest tony78_280z
Seems to be my day for being forgetful. Looks Ricey? Until they hear your unmistakable v8 motor pushin through your headers. Big bumpers are ugly. I know, I got em. I'm gonna (this summer) do my own One of a kind fiber glass job in which I make those bumpers look beautiful. I'm gonna sculpt them into a ZG Like nose. I'll take photos, list suplies used, and describe steps and post for you all. So there is hope for us with ugly bumpers.

You keep the hood latch, but it uses a different mount ( DAT-107, 108 ) https://shell7.tdl.com/~jags/Pages/Parts_DAT200.html It's an L bracket. Mikelly
Right, and doing the mod for it is cake... I'd not let that one worry you. If you have the ability to weld, just weld the L bracket in place, instead of drilling the holes as recommended in the manual. I can't recommend enough to BUY THE JTR BOOK before you dive in... Lots of answers in there... As to if the car handles well or not, Just search here and ask away... Lots of guys out there with excellent handling V8 Zs! Go with aluminum heads, intake and water pump and you will have a nice lightweight package that will be within 40# of the inline six motor. Guest tony78_280z
I aint got no aluminum stuff. I dumped alot of stuff from the EFI setup and AC unit and stuff so that had to get rid of some wieght. I do PLAN to lighten up with some aluminum and fiberglass at some point. I haven't noticed a change in handling from the l28. Other that when I mash on the gas the car lurches a little to the right. When I let up it goes back to the left. Either it's my imagination or it's motor twist. Maybe I need some additional supports. I'm not going for a super horsepower machine though.
