Guest 4.3L 280z
I've searched and searched but I can't seem to find anyone having the same problem as me. When I pull my e-brake lever tight it still pushes my car rather easily, I've checked and both wheels have the same tension on them as I pull it more and more. I read the chiltons book on adjustment but I don't see the rods its talking about and gives a picture of and it doesn't make much sense. all I see is the equalizer and then both cables go to the drums. Not that frustrated since this is the only task left until I get it inspected. I've been driving it all morning I can't believe all the looks I'm getting with the bright orange paint. RedNeckZ
Look above the transmission or follow the brake cable back from the drums . You should see the adjustment nuts there. Loosen the outer one first and then turn the other one in until you find the tightness you want. Test the handle a few times as you are adjusting to check for tightness. Don't forget to retighten the outer nut after you are done.
Guest 4.3L 280z
but what if right now I can't pull the parking brake all the way up anyways?
datsunlover
Are you sure the rear drums/shoes are adjusted properly? If the drums and/or shoes are worn, you might be at the 'end of adjustment' for the handle/cables, but still not be getting good contact between the shoes and drums causing the car to roll with the brake pulled. Im not sure what year your car is, but drum brakes are ussually quite similar.. you could try adjusting out the little 'star wheel' in-between the shoes.. (what IS the proper name for that thingy? ) and get it to the point you almost have to fight to get the drum back on. Then it'll only take a slight pull on the cables to lock the rear brakes. VRJoe
Check to make sure the cable isn't locked up. Watch the lever arm at the drum and have someone else pull on the handle. If the lever arm at the drum doesn't move your cables are shot. - Joe
Guest 4.3L 280z
Well the guy at the inspection place didn't seem to mind about it but I still need to get it working I guess. The levers moving I'm gonna pull the drum apart tomorrow and take a look inside, I just hope it isn't as hard to take off as it was last time. Thanks for your help
