NZR, But a Chevy V8 Hybrid

Recommended Posts

I was going to say that those Pantera ZF transmissions are going to be extremely expensive, but then my senses took over and I remembered that this is actually a Ferrari. I think just the tranny on a Ferrari could pay for the sweet drivetrain he has installed in that 308. I like what he is doing and I'm extremely curious about the 308:

Was this a salvage title car, theft recovery, or something of that nature? Usually you don't find guys doing this unless it's something like that. I'd love to see a forced induction SBC in that thing, along with some sick Konig flares and such. Man, what a ride.

I have contemplated something similar in a Lotus Esprit from the late 1970's. I think it could also be done.

Thanks for posting--keep us updated, but make sure you post a plethora of pics in the NON-Tech forum (although that is a Chevy Motor) :D !!!

Yeah, this guy has done a couple of Ferrari kits in the past, a Fiero based one and a Z car version, this is just the next step I guess !

The car itself, I know was purchased from a Ferrari dealer (sans engine and tranny) where it had sat for several years. He has developed a theory that the car was purchased at a deal by the second owner, or that they extended themselves too far buying it. Then the service came up (I think it has ~20 thousand miles on the car), they took the car in and AFTER the engine was pulled, they realized they couldn't pay and abandoned it. Then later the original engine may have been used in one of the cars that had problems as you mention. This is all just a theory though, even though it sat at the Ferrari dealership all those years, no one really knew the history.

I'll get in touch with him and ask some of the specifics, and yes, the tranny was a bit spendy.

Davy, When Lotus stuck their V8 in there, it was a magnificently compact package. IIRC, outside the defined dimensions of the engine itself, there was no unused space of greater than .15 cubic inch. I somehow doubt that it could be done without major structural modification. But since we LIKE to do major structural modification, maybe that isn't a bad thing! :-)

Is that a ZF tranny or a 915 Porsche?

How much can the ZF handle?

Isn't the same as a 914?

It's a Pantera transmission, a ZF as I understand it. It isn't a Porsche, this guy is also into them, but didn't seem impressed with the Porche tranny's ability to handle the power. Even though he says he has talked to others who have done the same thing with the Porsche unit. With this one, he just had to get the right adapter to go between the Chevy and the tranny bolt patterns.

There are pics and details of a lotus esprit with a SHO v6 on the net somewhere, a very cool conversion if you can find it.

Thanks, Brett--I'll look, but the only V6 that interests me would be from a GN!!

RPMS, that makes me think twice. Hmmm, the only thing (besides design) that interests me about the Esprit is the possibility of good power to weight ratio and handling. I'm waaay far away from doing this since I have not even finished the V8 240Z yet. First things first!! A V8 911 would suit me more-kits available! :-)

V8 911!? Poppy cock!!!

Go with a V8 914 and a wide body if you want a procshe, the 914's weigh even less than our 240's.

But really do whatever you want, the price is the same for a 914 swap or a 911.

The ZF huh? I wonder how much power that thing could handle.

The 915 box is good to 300hp and the 930 is good to 700hp.

That's some shifter linkage in that car. At first I thought it was a steering shaft LOL.
