Engine Clicking, Help me out!

I had my L28 engine rebuilt last summer, I have a performance cam, and thats about it. But there is this clicking noise which sounds like it is coming from the head, usually it happens the most whithin the first few minutes after I have started it. When I accelerate, sometimes it will hesitate, then a wierd loud clicking noise comes from the engine. I had a mechanic look at it, and he said to take it to the guy who built my engine. In case he doesn't know what the problem is, have any of you guys ever encountered this problem? Or heard of anything like this?

take a long screw driver, put your ear up to the big end and touch the engine (in various places) with the other end and listen around the engine until you pinpoint where the noise is comming from. If it is coming from the block, I would suggest not driving the car until you retorque everything in the bottom end, rods primarily. Hopefuly it will just turn out to be the valves, or something simple like that.

Check the intake and exhaust manifold studs. Also, this "performance" cam, did it come with new thickness pads to correct the rocker geometry? I noticed a difference in valve noise when switching from a carb setup to a FI setup... and again when swappingout cams, due to the rocker issue I mention above... But check the studs on the header and intake first.

I'd also pull the valve cover and check to see if the oil spray bar has had it's bolts loosen up. And while you're in there, you might re-torque the head bolts to be certain everything is good!

  • 1 year later...

I've noticed the same clicking in my engine, i just replaced the head gasket, but it was clicking before. I used a stethoscope to listen about, and the Fuel rails and somewhere around the #3 piston are making the most noise; would that be the same (possibly cam timing) as above? and could that be due to chain stretch?

when i re-did the timing, I used the #1 cam sproket position, and i know the #2,3 are for compensating for chain stretch, but i wasn't sure, so i didn't want to mess with anything... what d'yall think?
