Guest neo997x
I have a 78 fuel injected stock 280 engine and i have just put in new spark plugs(yes the ignition wire are in order 1-5-3-6-2-4) and radiator, so here is my problem under 2000 rpms it has ample power but over 2000 into 3000 it start to sputter and there is no more power, please help i am new to the board and i love it here so far thanks jonny
datsunlover
My first guess would be the timing needs adjustment, or the distributor cap/rotor have to be replaced.. Just curious, what plugs did you put in, and what was the gap set to?
Guest neo997x
i gapped em at .032 and Ngk plugs and i replaced them all cuz she's burning oil
datsunlover
Hmm.. I gap mine a bit bigger, .035-.040 but of you're burning oil, that might be a sign the engine is just tired.. does it puff a lot of blue smoke, or just a bit on startup? Worst case, I guess it could be a burnt exhast valve causing power to fall off.. but.. is this problem apearing only after changing the plugs? (did it do it before?) I remember when I had my 85 crx I had the strangest thing happen; I changed the plugs, and it fired up but it had lost a lot of power.. the higher I reved it, the worse it got. So I put the old junk looking plugs back it, and it ran good! wtf? So I checked the old ones, and re-gaped the new plugs to match (went bigger.. IE; if it was .032, I went to .038/.040) and it was like night and day.. the thing had plenty of power, and wound out to redline..
Guest tony78_280z
Interesting Neo997x, Did it run better before replacing the plugs? Or is the problem unrelated to the plug swap. My first gut instict is fuel pressure isn't high enough and cutting out at higher RPMs.
Tim240z
How old is the coil? If it is on its way out then it will provide weak spark under load or higher rpms... Tim
Guest neo997x
Well i dunno how old the coil is i just bought this thing over christmas and haven't been able to drive it steady yet, poor me, looks like pretty old to me. oh yeah alot of smoke, she's worse than the exxon valdiese with all the oil she burns. the problem was about the same but alot worse before the swap she, was stalling alot and bucking, i did realize some fuel pressure problems but it fixed with more gass in the tank, but it did run better with the old nasty plugs than the newer ones.
