4L60E problems

Start car. Put in ANY gear and press gas and car will barely move, I mean barely. Sounds like torque converter problems to me.... but I don't really know anything about a tranny. :bonk: Well the computer is completely hooked up to tranny and rest of the engine. Engine runs fine as far as I can tell. The PCM IS throwing codes. I don't have a reader for the codes or anything so I don't know if it is throwing codes because I removed all smog stuff and put headers on or what. I plan on buying cable for turnercat late this week. I did have the tranny rebuilt and shift kit installed. Would this require reprogramming of the PCM and possible torque converter problems? I have messed with brake switch but doesn't make a difference. Any ideas?!?! This is the last thing to fix then I can drive it for the first time!! This is driving me nuts!:confused2:icon50::cuss::bonk:

I have had a similar experience as you and it was due to a low tranny fluid level. However, I don't know too much about the differences in a 4l60E.

Sounds obvious, but are you 100% sure you have the right type and amount of transmission fluid in there? The procedure to fill autos includes starting and idling it while periodically moving through the gears (brake on), letting it warm up, and adding fluid until the stick shows full. Don't overfill! It would definetly not move if you just filled it cold and did not do the above procedure, as you add most of the fluid while the car is running.

So, let the car idle to its operating temperature on a level surface, check the level, and add as necessary.

Hope this helps...

I've tried moving shifter around into different gears and checking fluid level like any tranny but nothing. I also lifted rear tires off ground and they spin with engine etc. Just doesn't have uummphhh when wheels are on the ground. Does 94 LT1 have onboard Diagnostics? I heard they did by just jumpering two slots in the Diagnostics connector and codes will be flashed through check engine light. Don't know for sure. Maybe Tim would know.

The fact that it trying to move leads to low fluid level possibilities. Post the codes once you can read them. I suspect that you are getting several DTC's due to the lack of smog equipment and transmission issues. If you continue to run the tranny with low levels you WILL smoke the bands and posssibly create other problems. I don't have a FSM here at work but the fluid quanity should be around 9-10 quarts , I think so don't quote me. There are a multitude of other problems associated with the 4L60E trans if it was built incorrectly or part(s) were left out. Look for the obivious first. Check the fluid level and ensure the electrical connector is plugged in properly (NEVER twist the connector coming off or going on)!

Look up a website associated with obd1. You can jump out two pins on the ALDL connector and turn the key to run to pull codes. They are flashed three times per code such as dot dot 'pause dot dot dot (23). It will repeat three times and move on to the next code. You'll always get 55 which indicates that the distributor isn't rotating (engine off/key in run).

Hmmm....that looks like an OBDII connector?

If it has fluid and the check engine light isn't coming on, then I would imagine that either a connector is loose/disconnected, or the tranny is fried.....sorry not too much experience with the autos. I will consult my 94 Camaro Factory service manual this evening....

Well I took the car down to they guy who rebuilt the tranny. He said he will take a look at it. He is an electrical specialist also so it's his problem now.... until it runs... then it will be MY problem hehehehe:rockon:

OBD II is right.... kinda wierd

Well my mechanic that rebuilt the tranny just called me. He says he will have it done on Monday.:2thumbs: He said that the transmission is not receiving a signal from the computer so it is not engaging all the way. He said he is just figuring out the wiring because he has no schematic for it - it is a painless wiring harness. He did say that EVERYONE there is just in love with the car. :-) He said that he is really interested in what it is going to drive like and that we should race. He owns a (heavily modified) viper, hummer h2, some crazy fast bike that beat his viper that he bought off the guy after he beat the viper. I just advised him that it should be fun. I JUST WANT HIM TO GET IT DONE SO THAT I CAN DRIVE THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME! Anyone want to take a stab at what is wrong? It is a painless harness with vats bypass. Every wire is hooked up except wires for smog.
