  1. So simple... just give it 10-20 minutes after running at operating temp (usually enough time to drink at least one beer) before changing it. That way IMHO, the oil has drained back to the pan AND it is still warm enough to flow quickly enough to bring out any crud.
  2. Run my 04 Maxima on 87 all the time. The power does drop off a smidge, mostly felt in degradation of midrange responsiveness. Don't get me wrong, the thing still puts out some torque. No spark knock noticeable, except for when I rarely and accidentally lug it a lil bit (6 speed). Gas mileage remains the same if that matters. Cheers and good luck!
  3. At first I thought I wanted to fly F-18's. Everybody is pretty much indoctrinated that you want to fly them during the first part of flight school. Then, after that, you still might or might not. For me I really didn't know what I wanted to fly the most during the second half or so of primary flight school. After I did my aerobatics block jets looked less like THE answer for me. Coming into the program I had a CFII and Multi-engine ratings, so I had a little bit of fixed wing experience. I finally decided that rotor wing was something I wanted to do partially due to the fact that I had never even been in a helicopter in my life. Seemed like fun. So, rotors came my way and I couldn't have made a better choice. It's going to be great. Doing the (ch)air force thing and flying fighters would definitely be cool as hell and I encourage you to try your damnedest for it! Some will say that Navy/Marine jet guys don't get as much combat maneuvering training as the air force because they have to train to do carrier recoveries. However, I think it makes them that much more amazingly skilled since they can do it...
  4. Yeah, that guy IS nuts. Gimme power any day.
  5. Hey, just got my wings today! Going to fly SH-60B's in Jacksonville, FL (NAS Mayport). Just thought I would share it with you. If anyone is in Pensacola tonight we'll be at Flounder's on the beach starting at 9 PM.
  6. My favorite comment from the discussion would be: "oh and I think this video is hillarious, typical day at a CP in Iraq. I did the same thing many of times ANDEK ISLAH?(do you have weapons?) no no islah ANDEK WHISKEY? no no whiskey ANDEK BIERA? (beer) no no biera ANDEK DISDIK? disdik? mista sheenu disdik? (what is disdik?) DIS DIK MUTHA FCKA dont you understand english?? HAHAHA that was my favorite memory from Iraq"
  7. http://www.qubetv.tv/videos/detail/3483 LOL, just a little bored. I love those guys.
  8. Even if it did work, wouldn't that make your engine very unresponsive?
  9. I saw this posted on the other org I belong to and thought I would ask whose it was. http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=552705 Looks really good, except I'm not in love with the hood...
  10. Sure it wasn't a wolf? J/K, but usually they top out about the same weight as your dog. I grew up around coyotes and never saw or heard of one killing a dog that was around their same size. Cats, possums, cute little dogs, etc...yes. They can be aggressive if they are hungry enough, but my experience is that they are mostly scavengers. They scare deer pretty well, too, but what doesn't? I'd say keep an eye and ear out for roving packs of coyotes. If you don't notice them hanging around your house all of the time your dog isn't very interesting to them and you have nothing to really worry about.
  11. Yeah, a good set of new snow tires are all you'll need. The non-studded perform almost as well as the studded ones anymore. Oh, and +1 on the sandbag in the back!
  12. Are you really sure you want to run leaded gas in your car that is not designed for it? If yes, then do it!
  13. My family! I'm Pat, wife is Jamie. Wimpy dog is Nemo and the demonic cat is Anzhelika. http://www.elfyourself.com/?id=9612269044
  14. Well, obviously the I/E are different and that makes a difference. As for cams, they're a little less radical for the fwd applications, but other than that the internals are identical.
  15. Is that a HEMI? http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=73e_1192001762
  16. Take this from a "professional student" of the aviation field who graduated from a similar program as a CFII and now fly for the Navy. I have also had some real interesting relationships with instructors at times, but nothing that was not fixable with a little chat session and some maintenance. You are not over-reacting, IMHO, and some students and instructors just plain don't mix, but that percentage is VERY low. You just need to talk with him a little bit to let him see what you mean, so don't be scared to tell him what you are experiencing in your next brief. Instructors are not taught to take the controls away from you when you are doing a maneuver unless for the safety of flight. From my experience, the only times he should be solely be manipulating the controls are after a positive 3-way change of controls (or during a quick maneuver to avoid a bird, etc. if there's not time). Otherwise, he should be suggesting inputs more than making the actual inputs and letting you make your mistakes. One exception would be if you came in excessively low he might simply say "I have the controls" and immediately execute a go around for you when things get questionably unsafe. IMO he should not be simply doing slips for you or adding power for you in the pattern without you first knowing he is going to be doing so. Instead, he should be coaching you on how to fix the situation when you get a little "off". Yes, this is a simple concept, but some instructors might not yet have the right feel for how much "riding along" on the controls is actually too much. Bottom line is this: YOU are paying a great deal of money for your flight training. It's worth the effort to straighten things out between you and the instructor. Don't be scare to talk to him, either! He was most likely in your shoes just a few years ago. Pat
  17. Wow, looks like you just plain over-torqued it! Good job.
  18. I encourage your swap! I have an 04 Maxima and love the engine, it's the best thing about the car. Well, that and the cavernous roominess compared to the Z. But I digress. Sentras don't come with VQ3.5's unless it has been hybridized. Altimas, Maximas, Quest minivans, Muranos, 350Zs do. Stay away from VQ2.5s older than a couple of model years if you are going that route. Never heard of a carburated VQ, but anything is possible. As far as N/A power, I know of several FWD applications that are running over 300fwhp and the 350Zs definitely have that number down in stockish form (pretty much just a different cam from the FWD applications). I think your idea of triple SUs is cool, but would be a one-off job all around. A cheap FWD engine w/ecu and a 350Z 6 speed tranny would be the way to go IMHO :> OR, you could run the whole thing with megasquirt and be my hero ;>
  19. I'm learning to fly helos for the Navy right now, and that man is INSANE! I can't believe the amount of confidence he has in that bird. Also, the Bell 206 (a.k.a. TH-57) can only dream of making low-g maneuvers like that before the main rotor falls off.
  20. Pop N Wood You stole my thunder! MMMM, #383 with a 383.
  21. HA! I got the last comment in on the second link. That is all. Love this site and its members.
  22. Don't do it! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I can't say that any harder. I have done it and it WILL have a sucky result overall, so your time in preparation, etc. is just going to be a waste. I would only use that stuff on 1) a tractor or 2) a demolition derby car that I wanted to be all 1 color. Seriously.
  23. Damn, 2003Z, I wish I could do that! Hey, I was 24 and still daily driving my 280Z! Drove the 280 during college, but it quickly became VERY impractical for me to daily it after graduating because of gas mileage, no a/c, rust, etc. Very happy with my 2004 6sp Maxima. It's modern, not too slow, rust-free and safe. However, having a car payment does suck. Sometimes I think I should have just looked for a cherry (gasp) S30 2+2 or something along those lines that had working a/c and would be fairly reliable. On the plus side, I can see myself driving this car for a long time, especially since I still have my toy.
