I have a brand new Federal Mogul fuel pump that I am thinking about simply running a regulator on (in my v-8 swap). The pump was sold to me by a local parts store as the stock replacement for my '82 280zx. I know from the JTR manual that the stock fuel pump won't last long by simply putting a regulator on it but this is an aftermarket fuel pump that I still have the receipt for and honestly wouldn't mind burning up as it's still under warranty for the rest of my life. So my question is, can I run this pump with a regulator? Will it die immediately? Will it feed a close-to 500hp 383? I don't plan on spinning the thing past 6,000rpm and I will be running a 670cfm street avenger carb. Thanks a ton for any info! Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
2126 Posted March 15, 2005 Share Posted March 15, 2005 It might help to know how you intend to feed your 383SBC!! Will it be via EFI of carburator? Typically on carbs you will not need more than 5 psi and of course a pump that will supply an appropriate GPM. EFI systems (like on a 280ZX) requires a higher pressure...somewhere in the 15 to 30 psi range. If you have never plumbed a fuel system and do not have the knowledge or experience to do so....get with someone who has the knowledge and experience to help you. That my advise anyway! I've heard the ZX pumps are quite capable of supplying fuel to EFI engines, but i'm not sure what would happen when regulated down to about 5 PSI. Tim240z Posted March 15, 2005 Share Posted March 15, 2005 If you are planning to use a return to tank type regulator, I don't see why it wouldn't work, after all, the fuel would basically be free flowing back to the tank, with 5psi of it going to the carb.... Tim240z Posted March 15, 2005 Share Posted March 15, 2005 Any more than 7-8 psi will overpower the needle and seat in the carb and flood it. You WILL have to regulate the pressure if the pump pushes mpore than that. Low pressure pumps are so cheap, that messing with the high pressure stock pumps is pointless.
